A Problem....Updated
« on: March 13, 2015, 05:18:45 PM »
I was told that my furnace needed a new heat exchanger. Just labor would run thousand dollars to change it.  I didn't think putting that much into a 16 year old furnace was worth it. I chose to go with a new furnace. I called around for estimates and went with the company that put in the other furnace and our air conditioner. I ordered a 100,000 BTU, 96% efficient unit. They installed said unit. That night I had to call them. The furnace wasn't running. They checked it and said it was fine. It came on. Later that night, the furnace did not come back on, house got cold. I put out space heaters to warm the house. I called the company the next day. They came out. Checked the furnace said the fan wasn't working right. He called someone and ran a jumper on the control panel, so the furnace fan would run stage two. Still the furnace wasn't heating the house. I called again and they came out and checked the furnace again and said the heat was trapped at the furnace . Did I have any vents closed? I said yes, but they have been closed for years. They said that's why the furnace isn't running. It's getting too hot and shutting off, to protect it's self. Told me to open those vents and left. That was Friday. I opened them and nothing changed. Furnace was still not heating the house up. Tuesday I called the company and they came out asked if I opened the vents I said yes. Checked the furnace to see if any codes were showing...everything was showing fine. Asked what is the thermostat set at, I said it's set at 80. (My Mother has Alzheimer's and Parkinson's and Angina and Severe Arthritis...she is comfortable at this temp) The repair guy said "Oh that's set too high. The furnace isn't made to run that hot. Turn it down."  He left. Furnace still wasn't getting the house warm. I called Thursday. I said why isn't this furnace getting the house warm enough? Do I need to get a bigger furnace? Isn't 100,000 BTUs enough? That's what this furnace is suppose to be. He said I'll look it up...I thought that's funny..he ordered it for me.  He came back and said " it's a 80,000 BTU" I said that's not what I ordered. He said "I changed it to an 80,000 BTU..it's good enough and we're not going to change it." and he hung up. I lost all trust in that company. My question is if this is good enough..why isn't it heating my house. There is a 6-10 degree difference between what the thermostat says and the temp in the next room. You can barely feel the fan blowing the heat out any vent, when the furnace does run. I'm looking to if anyone has any experience with heating or knows someone that can give me any advice or help.

Thanks,
Mike

I think that Mike might be asking if anyone could possibly help him diagnose the issue with his new furnace, that is in the field...

lol-gotcha.

Well hopefully someone on the forum can help or knows someone that can help out with a diagnosis. Sounds like the company that installed it screwed him pretty badly and is not willing to correct the situation?

Even if someone could tell him what it is, I know that would point me in the right direction to repair it myself if it were mine.

HVAC are required to have a license through the state, check and see if you can file a complaint.  I would also file a complaint with the BBB.  If they won't make it right, send them a letter certified mail indicating you intend to sue them in district court. If it's a company, they're required to hire an attorney at the district court level, which will cost them at least $500, probably closer to $750.  It would likely be cheaper to take care of the problem.  If they installed a unit which was smaller than what you paid for, that is likely considered a fraud, which means you can sue for treble damages.

Good Suggestions Marty!

PLUS 1 Stan!  :)

That's what I was thinking too!

What is wrong with people these days. Seems like more and more people are taking advantage of others without remorse!?

I am definitely no expert and not in the field, but this sounds a lot like what happened to my system. Extremely long story short, I ended up doing everything on own to fix my furnace and central ac thanks to my neighbor who back fed the entire system. Come to find out I had installed the new board in the furnace wrong and instead of it blowing medium or high mine was on low. It was a simple fix that cost me a #@!& load of money for someone spend all of five seconds looking at and to swap two wires. Probably isn't your issue, but might be worth looking at. For the record, my vote is the BBB or licensing board route. I have had better luck with that than civil action.

I have been involved in the distribution side of HVAC for the last 15 years. What City/town are you in, chances are I could suggest a reliable trustworthy contractor in your area. The company I work for cover's pretty much the entire state of michigan. Also what brand furnace is it that you installed in your house if you don't mind me asking.

My house is 2100sq. ft. not counting half basement.  The new furnace is a Amana as was my old one.I have since found out my old furnace was a 92000 btu. They are not a member of the BBB. Fox has not called back.  Called WJAR don't care along with WNEM. I am hoping warmer weather gets here soon....it bothers me that my mother is upset that she's cold.

I had a different H&C company come out....their findings were: code violations on the way the furnace was installed and asked why didn't they put in a fresh air intake vent...there's plenty of room, take about ten minutes. And the furnace is too small for my heating needs. They suggested I check to see if a permit was pulled for the install. I called the city to see if a permit was pulled...one was. I asked to have the inspector come out and check it. They said " the company that installed it are the ones to call us." I said "well it's installed in my house and I'm calling to have it inspected." I did say it politely. The guy that answered  said "well they're a good company and we're down to one inspector." I said, "I want it inspected." He switched me over to a recording and I left my name and number.  My neighbor told me it took two months for them to come and check his new furnace.
