Maumee River walleye run
« on: April 09, 2016, 08:05:32 AM »
I scored a couple of decent catches of nice Maumee River walleye this Spring...with the cooler weather the bite has slowed down but the river is still full of pre & post spawn fish. The bite has ebbed and peaked numerous times this year. The early warm spell we had brought fish into the river ahead of schedule. They stick around for the optimum spawning conditions with is relative to water temp so this year we have an extended run with another few weeks of good walleye fishing to come yet.

Anyone fishing 'eyes up in Mi yet?
Any other fishing action to mention for early Spring?
All the best folks,
Danny

Nice looking eyes there Danny. Weather here in Michigan has not been cooperating with us yet this spring. My buddy and I were supposed to go on the first steelhead trip of the year to the Au Sable back on the 4th-7th but Mother nature has other plans and dumped so much water into the system the river was about 3ft above normal cfs flow. Then last week they got about 8" of snow and 4" more expected tomorrow night. The good news is the weather is supposed to get up into the 50's and even touch 60" later next week so all that snow should melt and flush the water through the system shortly after. So now we are planning on heading up the 20th -23rd for some Steelhead and there's usually some nice eyes that come in with the steelhead too.

It has been a crazy Spring season so far for sure...so in your efforts to connect to steelhead do you catch 'eyes as a "by-catch"...or do you mix up what you're targeting? Do you fly fish or do use a bobber & spawn-sac for the steelies? Definitely on my bucket list of fish to catch...

I'm a fly angler, maybe once a year I'll take out the spin rod but 99.9% of the time I fly fish. The walleyes are usually more of a bonus catch while targeting steelies. Usually the eyes are done spawning and move out of the river about the time the steelhead start to peak but there's always a few nice 3-5lb eyes around munching on egg & nymph flies when we are looking for chrome.
