Power Heads

I'm thinking of adding a power head to one side of my 125 gal tank. What brand would you recommend and what size power head.

I bought a few on clearance at pet supplies plus, aquaclears, they were like $5 and $40 on amazon so I figured they were a good deal.

I dont think you need a particular brand or model, just look for a good deal

It depends on what you are trying to do. If it to create flow in dead spots a wave maker type of powerhead would be idea if it is to just create more flow. A standard maxijet would do. The wave maker style pumps have a higher out put so this is something to look into.

That is part of the problem when I looked at manufacturers power heads, they have all sorts of outputs to choose from.  I've read reasons to have power heads is fish like it, circulate the water, create more surface turbulence to get more O2 in the water, and to help push stuff on the bottom of the tank into the filter. If a wave maker accomplishes all that then I' m in. Any particular name brand to consider?

Hydro makes a good one best one out right now are the echo techs depeding on the size of a tank a mp 10 would be ideal but they are expensive. they do make a mod for the maxi jets so you can do a wavemaker or change it back to the powerhead if that is not what you want. Look into it is all I can tell you. Just because you see something cheap it doesn't mean its going to be what you are looking for.

I like Hydor.  They have a two year warranty as well.  Only brand I will use.

Yeah only thing I don't like with hydor the polarity on the power head can get reversed overtime so if you plug it in the wrong way it will spin in reverse. Ive had a couple come back to me that way. They checked them out and sent new ones but some people have having issues with the rubber bumper falling out and other silly things with them.

I will be getting a 125 gal tank, And plan on using Texas holey rock in the tank. Right now I have 1 40# rock looking for more.

I like Maxi-Jet, Hydros, Aquaclears but as long as it pushing water, it doing its job.  Higher gph rating powerhead will work better for 125 gallon.  You Might want 2, one for both ends.

I'd like to get a higher gph rating but I don't want to over due it. What would seem adequate for a 125 tank?

I used 2 hydro 3s in my 90 gallon.  At 850 gph a piece it was great water movement, with very few dead spots. I would try one power head at a time to find what flow you will be happy with.
