How long?
« on: June 16, 2013, 07:39:08 PM »
Just set up this new 20 gallon, and filled it with tank water from established tanks, and quikrete play sand. It's a little cloudy, but I have the filter running. How long will it take to settle? I will be putting fish in tonight.

If the filter came from an existing tank and the bioload is similar to what the filter was handling before, there should be no issue IMO/IME.

FWIW transfering tank water doesn't really help in the grand scheme of bacteria for biological filtration aside from the water being near the correct temperature. The bacteria reside on surfaces and are not free-floating in the water column. This is why surface area is such an important feature of good biological filtration media.

Ok, yeah the filter is from my christmas fulu tank, and i took it straight off that tank and put it on the new one. This sand should be ok, right? I rinsed it, but there are still little things from the sand on the top of the water.

Agreed good to go... The water will settle a little tomorrow but after a few water changes it should be normal

I agree with what's been said so far.

I just want to add that your filter is good g to clog up pretty quick getting rid of that cloudiness.

From experience. >:(

If you move a seeded filter over you are good.

As danielratti said if the filter is seeded then you should be okay, I would still check the water parameters though just to make sure. Has the cloudiness cleared up yet?

I've used the same sand and it was not nearly as cloudy as that tank is. I think you should've cleaned it some more...IMHO.
