New to site and Aquaria
« on: December 19, 2011, 01:07:15 PM »
Hello all,

I would like to say thanks for having this site available and all the effort that goes into it. I am new to the hobby and looking forward to learning as much as I can about it. I am currently planning (at a nice slow pace to try to do it right) a Mbuna species only tank, most likely Pseudotropheus Saulosi. I figured that since I want to be a responsible keeper and not cross breed, that it would be safest to go the species route. I hope to learn from you all and to share my experiences with you all.

Have a great Christmas Holiday and Happy Fish Keeping

Welcome to the forum.

Sounds like you're off to a good start! What size tank do you plan on setting up? I'd highly suggest at least a 48" long tank, if at all possible (40/45/50/55 gallon if staying with a ~12.5-13" width - or 65/75 if you have space/funding for an 18" width).

Well that is a funny story. I originally bought a 10 gallon to get started in the hobby, I know don't say anything. The LFS that I had went to even guided me down this route. Took it home set it up and three days later, per the LFS recommendations, added 6 comet/common goldfish for cycling. When I told the wife that after its cycled we can go get our real fish (community tank at the time), she replied "Your not getting rid of my goldfish." So we ended up buying a 55 gallon tank and stand. As I started to research I found and fell in love with the idea of a Malawi setup of some sort. Long story short ended up buying a used 29 gallon for the goldfish, 55 gallon for my Mbuna setup and keeping the 10 gallon as a hospital / quarantine tank.

55 Gallon setup:
Marineland 55 gallon tank
Marineland Emperor 400 x 2 filtration
Marineland Visi-Therm 200 heater
Tetra Whisper 60 air pump
I will be doing a sand substrate (Aragonite) and slate rock decorations.

Now to just find a local breeder of Saulosi, any suggestions.

Ok I'm lost what is this?

Edited: Ok the internet is my friend. Yeah I guess I will fall in this category of keeper soon enough. Wish I would have bought a 6 footer instead of the 4 foot 55 gallon.

Don't worry.  That's what MTS is all about.  You should get a 6' tank for Christmas and still keep the 55.   ;)
