F%$#&@g Sponge Filters!!!! I have a question!

Ok lately my sponge filers have been falling apart.  The tube and the collar that connects to the strainer behind the behind the sponger seem to be very loose despite their being tight originally.  They always come out and start gurgling at the surface.  I just made an order to Ken's Fish and forgot to get replacement parts.  If I put a thread or two of teflon tape would there be any concerns of contamination.  I assume not since its used on plumbing lines for drinking water but thought I would get some comments.

I have No idea about the contamination part. But, my filters to the same thing, sometimes switching the parts around helps

I've used teflon tape in the past without any issues.  I've also used it with egg tumblers as well.

Yeah yeah Jeff good point!     

My egg tumblers from wet thumb are loose as hell also Marty.  I swore I'd never buy any more of those kind due to that issue.  I'm going to break out the reckon tomorrow, thanks for the input.

Teflon tape is a good idea. I'll have to give that a shot sometime.

What I've been doing is using a rubber band. I wrap it a couple of times around the base, then twist once, put the collar through at an angle, and it pretty much holds it all together as long as nothing is cocked at an angle. The bad part is the rubber band deteriorates over time and I have to replace it every 3-6 months typically. I just wait for the gurgling noises to know when it's time.

I think half of my sponge filters have teflon tape on them  and there has not been a problem

So I'm not alone here, this is apparently a common issue.  No time today maybe tomorrow I'll break out the tape.
