Ick cure Ideas...
« on: June 02, 2012, 09:06:03 PM »
Ok so I get home from working 13.5 hours today go to turn my lights on in my tank and first fish I see... My midnight moloto with ick here is the kick to the balls... my 10 gallon has fry and my sulpher head peacock in it the 30 breeder I use... Girlfriends sister hijacked it for her turtle... Sooooo since I haven't been really keeping up on my tank cleaning (usually weekly water changes went 2 weeks) I did a water change and took out about 30 gallons. When I went to see what I had for ick nothing barley had any aquarium salt nearest lfs is closed... I don't think my lack of water changed caused it but more then likely my girlfriend feeding fish for me since ive worked 13 hours Monday-Saturday this week and having legal issues Im dealing with she is trying to help.

What are my options for dealing with this I've spent the past 2 years looking for a midnight and don't want to loose this one. I know I work at a LFS also and don't have squat with me for ick...  Im hoping the neighbor kid has some salt I can have since Ive been busy fixing his tank cause he was told livingstoniiand venestus will do good in a 55 gallon tank with vics and peacocks... If someone can give me a break here I would love it.

50%WC, Raise the temperature to  85°, add some non iodine salt.1tsp/10gal, wait 24hrs, 50%WC & keep this schedule until the itch is gone.

So really any non-iodized salt not just aquarium salt. I still have like a pound of epsom salt would that even work?

IME Nox-Ich knocks the heck out of ich (beware that it also stains anything rubber/plastic in the tank to a dark green color as well).

I gotta see what the Local store has... Im sure not much but oh well. It kinda hit my by surprise since I haven't dealt with ich in 5 years. I added what salt I had and after taking a shower and going to get dinner it looks like the ich is kind of clearing up. I could be mistaken though

Unless you're using a crappy brand of table salt, the anti-caking agent is unlikely to be harmful to your fish.  The most commonly sold salt (Morton's) uses calcium silicate as an anti-caking agent.  Calcium silicate is essentially a combination of limestone and diatomaceous earth.  Diatomaceous earth is not harmful to fish, and is actually used in a diatom filter, which will get just about everything out of your water (excellent water polisher).

Furthermore, iodine is a necessary staple in a fish diet, and many fish foods contain it.  Also, the amount of iodine in salt is so negligible, you would pickle the fish before you would have a toxic level of iodine in the water.

"Aquarium salt" is made from evaporated seawater.  Which means it's not pure salt, and you don't know what you're getting with it as far as other minerals, and in what concentrations.

If you are going to raise your water temp up to 85 degrees, do it slowly!  Be aware that by raising the temperature, you're reducing the amount of oxygen in the water, so you may want to add an airstone.

Here is a pretty good article on cichlid-forum.com breaking down some of the different treatments for ich:

Yeah it looked a lot better when I shut the lights off. I add iodine to the tanks at work also some of it really helps with coral growth along with shrimp growth and reproduction as well. I haven't looked in my tank yet I know at 12 it was reading 84 in the tank.
