Selling forum sales
« on: August 05, 2016, 10:28:52 AM »
I am having trouble selling fish. My lfs has to be convinced to take them for free. Which is for the birds. I am talking about adults not fry. I had some luck on the forum. It did seem like I had more bites on the apple when it wasn't a pay site even though you only have to be paid to post for sale.
I get no call no shows, and not much activity period. My fish are not junk. They are more exotic than those typically at the lfs. I am wondering if it is because I live where I do. I know it's possible people just are not interested in the few species that I have, but the prices I pit are practically stealing and still nothing.
I really did get more hits when it wasn't a pay site. Not sure if that is coincindence or if others have noticed it too.

My opinion as to the reasons

  • It is summer!  The hobby slows down for many.  They are outside doing other things
  • Yes your location is a drive for some people
  • Your prices were good on your recent ad, except maybe elec yellow.  Elec yellows can be had for lower price at auctions

My suggestion, is attend the MCA club meeting on Aug 12th.  Offer to deliver to the meeting.
We also have a mini auction and your welcome to bring and auction them off.

I gotta agree with Jon for sure. I know personally for me the past couple months I was not doing much at all with my fish/tanks because it's summer and I've been busy fishing, upnorth, going to car shows etc etc. So I was just making sure my fish made it through my vacation and such more than looking to add anything new. So it's just now the past week or two I've been getting more back into working on my show tanks and such. Would guess that's how most people are right now as well.

My thoughts:

- It's summer. The part about the club being a paid club isn't so much the reason as it is because it's summer.

- IME, 1/2 of all private fish sales interactions are great and 1/2 aren't. Due to being short on time, I'm less active trying to sell fish privately anymore because of the no shows, tire kickers, etc.

- For me, auctions work best. Some might complain that fish don't always sell for top dollar at auctions, but I sell and I buy. I do this as a hobby, not a business. Whether the prices are high or low, I typically break even and get new fish to enjoy.  ;D

Thoughts specific to your ad:

- You're out there a bit like myself, so it's harder to get anyone to travel to pickup near you.

- The price for the electric yellows is high IMO, unless it's a really nice pair maybe.

That was the wrong price on the labs. So thanks for pointing that out. And thanks for the tip about the meetings.

Summer time. Not many want to be tied to a fishroom when it's nice outside & could be at a lake.
