Acrylic Tank BIG issue
« on: April 26, 2012, 03:54:04 PM »
Long story short I bought a brand new acrylic 8ft. tank last fall. I filled it up and got it really running sometime in October. Around December to my horror I started to notice small fleck marks across the front pain. (Exactly the same issue as my old 300 had happen--which I attributed to the age of the tank and all of the expanding contracting of a used tank) These aren't scratches on the inside or outside but rather imperfections in the acrylic. It makes the fish look like they're in 3-D when they swim past. This continued to get worse and I found myself in the horrible position of taking the tank down. Luckily it's under warranty and the manufacturer has been very good about communication. I sent them a video of the issue and after a couple of discussions they kept their guarantee and built me a new tank. I just learned that it's been built and is en route to me. So now comes the fun part of taking the current take down, hundreds of pounds of rocks, sand, re-homing fish etc. Total drag but I am thankful that the new one is on its way and keeping my fingers crossed that it holds up this time.

*Has anyone ever seen an acrylic tank do this? It's not the normal "crazing" around the seems its across the front glass.

**Also my wife and kids have told me that they want me to put BIG fish in the new tank like I used to have, because Africans are boring. (I thought Blair would get a kick out of this.)

hell yeah, you know I'm all smiles right now.  I even have a nice big Pearsei that I've been considering letting go.

Really sucks that you have to replace the tank. But, it's good the manufacturer is handling it.
I don't have any experience with acrylic tanks&  don't recall hearing of issues like this.

I agree with George, it's always good to let everyone know when a manufacturer stands behind their product.

The important issue no one has brought up yet is......

Will the old tank still hold water or eventually fail, (is this just a cosmetic issue) and what are you going to do with it........  cough cough sell it cheap to my good friend Marty lol

I have a breeding pair of Dovii that I could part with (the male is all of 18") but that would probably be the only thing you could keep in there besides some catfish or large plecos  ;D

Yeah this whole situation sucks---I'm dreading tearing that monster down (Probably starting this evening) Need to decide which fish to keep and which to move. Allegedly the manufacturer wants the old tank back to test if to determine what happened to it. Not sure how they're going to get it, I'm certainly not taking it to them. If they don't take it I'll sell it.

The new tank has arrived and will be filled up next week. I'd like to note the manufacturer (IPI) and thank them for sticking with their guarantee and providing the new tank with a thicker front plate. Also thanks to Tom at the Fish Doctors in Ypsi for being the middle man. He was very patient and helpful through this whole process and even had one of his guys deliver it. Also thanks to Howler (Joe) for helping us swap the tanks out. Looking forward to filling it up with some monster American cichlids.
