Cracked glass need advice
« on: October 24, 2015, 12:41:27 PM »
hey guys, I just got this tank (from Steve, and witnessed the terrible fishmageddon) and I chipped the edge during transport. Some of the sealant is exposed on the external side of the tank now, but the seal, while older, still seems pretty tight. Would you guys use this? Is there anything I can do to fix it?

I'll post a picture in a few.

It's a 33 long so it's 4x1x1 feet. There is only a tiny bit of the rubber stuff exposed.

I would think you'd be okay if the integrity of the silicone seal is intact.  If you're nervous, maybe fill it outside first, and let it sit for a couple of days?

Oh no, I hate to hear that. Although with the luck I have had the past 48 hrs I'm just thankful it wasn't me where I'd end up dropping it on ya when you were over lol, that would have fit right in with the way my luck the past few days has went.

Yeah you got here about 20 mins after I discovered "fishmageddon", it was not a pretty sight was it.

Can you post a pic of where it got chipped? Maybe we can tell better by seeing it.

Pressure increases with depth. If it's near the top I'd have much less concern than if it were near the bottom.

Happened to me years ago on a 29g and used a epoxy on the outside just to give it strength.

Here's a picture, it's towards the middle of the tank in terms of depth.

Not to bad. Seen a lot worse I would just put some epoxy on it just for peace of mind if it were me

Yeah I'd say I agree with Mike, you should still be okay. I'd probably do like he suggested and fill it over with a little 5 min epoxy on the outside though just as a piece of mind type thing.

I had a 90g that had the exact same thing happen to it.  Because I hauled it up 4 flights of stairs there was no way I wasn't going to fill it up.  It turned out to be fine, no issues.

So I filled the crack with some epoxy and also scraped off the old silicone and re-sealed all four edges just to be safe. I think it should be okay now, let me know if you guys see issues with this work...thanks!

PS - I know this isn't the technical platform for this but if anybody knows of a 4 foot stand they can sell me for cheap, LMK, thanks :)
