Complete loss
« on: October 23, 2015, 01:18:35 PM »
Just came down to the office and see 95% of my fish are dead. Lost everything except the bleekeri, couple plecos and my frotosa is barely hanging on. All 20+ other fish are dead. No idea why because they were fine yesterday. Did WC yesterday (treatmet with prime as normal) and just wondering if the city could have done something to the water??

This is just unreal. Lost all those beautiful fish.

Ugh that's terrible man, sorry to hear this.
I wouldn't rule out a water contaminant. It wouldn't be the first time. I believe they sometimes put extra stuff in the water when there's a break or something

Is the heater functioning properly and nothing new was added to the tank? Did anyone have access to your fish? Like kids could pour a shot of vodka in there trying to get the fish drunk or something, you never know.

Traced to the power strip my FX5 is plugged into must have went out at some point between 7pm last night and this afternoon. No filtration or water movement for probably 12-15 hrs. With the high number of fish one must have died and then just set off a chain of deaths.

Sucks more than words can say. I had just recently got all all the fish I wanted in that tank. Trying to look at the good side which is as of now I still have my bleekeri, frontosa, one yellow lab, five plecos and catfish. Kind'a hard to even see a good side at the moment though :( :( :(

It's defiantly a real downer that's for sure, some of those fish like my 10" Venustus I have had for about 3 years and was really about as attached to as you can be to a fish. I have not had good luck over the past few years that's for sure. Had the 265g leaked multiple times, then 2 years ago I lost that whole 55g tank of peacocks due to a power outage for 4 days while I was on vacation, now this.

Not going to let it deter me from the hobby though, talk to enough people and they all say if you stay in the hobby long enough things like this happen to everyone. Still sucks though.

With that said, all the bodies are out of the tank, water is changed and treated and back to normal parameters (ammonia spiked after all those dead fish over night) but back to normal now. Just got home from a couple of the local fish stores and have some new fish to keep my bio colony alive. Figured going from 20+ fish down to 3 would cause it to crash out if I left it like this.

So have a new yellow lab and Acei (both 6") a 5" sunshine peacock, what I think is a Regal blue 4" and a trio of little 2.5" Moorii. A good friend is giving me a nice male empress tomorrow as well. Will for sure be checking prameters multiple times per day over the next week just to make sure my filter colony is okay, but slowly will start rebuilding the stock as I can.

Sorry to hear that Steve.  It is very true about that saying. Hang around long enough something like that is bound to happen sometime.  I had it happen to me with a heater malfunction last year.

Well today is a much better day. Although I had to work like crazy the past 7 hours after getting home from the auction because I bought a species that I didn't want to put in the peacock/hap tank so I had to get the new 75 "discus" tank set up for a short time to house him (nope it's not a discus)  ;D I'll post some pics of the restocked 75 as well as the new guy in the other tank shortly.

The above is the tank with the new re-stock in it. Some of the fish came from a couple local fish shops yesterday, then about 10 of them came from the auction today. There's still some hiding in the pics like the trio of Moorii that are about 2" long, and a smaller Y.lab, but the majority of them are pretty active and eating well now. Still sucks to have lost the fish I had but at least now I have my nice tank of fish back to enjoy. And I also added a 2nd air pump this time which is plugged directly into a separate fused outlet so this will not happen again in the future. Still have a fish or two I'll be adding this week but this should be nice and full once the smaller guys start growing.

Then there is my unexpected pick up below....He's actually a good 9" but looks smaller in the pic because he's sitting back about a foot behind the pvc intake so it makes him look smaller in the pic lol

Saw the 9 inch'ish F1 male Burundi Frontosa on the table at the auction and I kind a fell in love with him. So I believe the "discus 75g" is now going to become a Frontosa 75g. Won't be able to house many in it but I figure this male, the 7" female I have from my other tank, and maybe two others for a total of four, perhaps five at most will make a nice looking tank. Plus they will be easier to care for than the Discus would be with the times I am on fishing trips for a few days every so often. Not to mention there's just something about Frontosa I have always liked. And if I enjoy having them in the 75g then I can see myself maybe getting a 6ft tank for them after that and adding a couple more to it, then doing the discus tank after that  ;D

BTW Marty, Josh, Jon & Pete I was gonna come back and hang out at the table with you guys for a bit but as you can tell I was focused on trying not to miss any of the fish bag #'s I was trying to snag for the re-stock so was zeroed in on that till I had to take off  ;)
