Best process for refinishing a metal stand?
« on: April 27, 2015, 02:47:59 PM »
So, I have the basic concept - sand off any rust, prime (or paint with something that is more waterproof and includes some kind of primer).

I'm unclear on the specifics - what grit sandpaper to use, what brand/style paint is best, etc.  I've got a couple stands that are rusty that I don't plan to use but think they'll sell better if repainted.  And, I'd like to know for future reference.

Thanks.

If you have an angle grinder, that's the way to go. A wire brush attachment on a drill works too but will take much longer. Anything metal that I've salvaged was then painted with rustle up spray paint. Good luck!

If I don't have either of those things, will a hand wire brush work (like the one used for cleaning paint off the brushes)?  I realize it would be a lot more work.

Sure would and while it's more work than power tools, it'll still be faster than doing it all with sandpaper by hand. You're still likely to do some that way and I'd recommend you use a medium grit. Remember the metal needs to be clean of rust but not necessarily shining like a mirror.

Good to know, thanks.

Ideally sandblasting is the way to go. You could call local auto body shops and see if they would do it and the cost. I wouldn't think they would charge super crazy but hard to say. If you have a drill cordless or plug in, then wire wheels would be the next best option. You can get them fairly cheap at Lowes or Home Depot. The key to painting metal anything is prep. Any rust left behind before priming or painting will come back. As for paint and primer any good quality spray paint brand available at Home Depot, Lowes or Ace hardware etc. would work. Hope this helps.
No matter where you go, there you are.
