Cooler lighting
« on: March 15, 2012, 09:47:41 AM »
And just to clarify for Blair....Cool as in not so hot..lol :P 8) ( I couldnt resist)

The new tank I have is great but the canopy is relativity shallow and because of its sold construction there isn't much air flow or heat that is allowed to escape. So because of this my nicest light fixture can't be on for more than 30min. max. I put on some old regular duel bulb T5s and those seem fine but the 4bulb corallife T5HO felt like it was going to melt. On top of that I'm thinking I need a slightly milder light...not dimmer just more like 6700k instead of 10-1200k and actinics. I really want that Yellow on my Ilangi to POP!
I've been looking around at LED and would really like to maybe try mounting some type of lighting to the canopy lid. It doesn't have to be LED, just something that will make the color pop and not be get too hot.
I was half thinking of trying to build my own LED with some bigger 3watts but I honestly don't feel confident enough to do all the soldering.
Either way I want to get something for around $200-$250...and that means enough light to cover my 72" tank. I've been looking around but it seems like either people do over kill 10-1200k with actinics or go way less and the tank looks dark. Basically just hoping for some personal experience. All of mine was with all-male peakcock/hap tanks for the most part. I've been to Aquatraders.com and am thinking about some of the models they have too....btw, anyone tried any of those strips of LEDs that you have to buy a powersupply for but can hook several together? Like the TrueLumen Pro LED?

Hey Nick I have one ecoxotic stunner strip it is actinic on my bio cube.  I want to buy a 8000K get rid of my pcs.  The stunner strip puts alot of light for only being 12" long.

I thought about those but I have a 72" tank...It would take an awful lot of those little guys....like 10-12..that would cost a lot. I am really leaning toward the True Luman Pro or some type of DIY.
