My advice would be to use 5 gallons unless you're breeding fish that have extremely small fry. The tanks won't foul or crash as easily.

I've been having really good luck with the 2.5. and at the same time avoids me using a lot of Tumblers n baskets

I don't use gravel in any of my smaller tanks.
