BABIES....
« on: August 25, 2011, 10:46:57 PM »
Just a little something here, a week and a half ago and only two days apart two seperate females released there fry. One a very small batch, only 4. That was the Red Zebra, and the other a Ngara White Tail. She let loose of about 10, not a for sure count yet. But im super excited. Suppose that means im doing something right huh...Or maybe just got lucky. 8) 8)

Good work.  Just so you know if you strip the girl earlier you'll have a much higher yield count.  Bunch of people on this board are good strippers.  I'm sure one of us is will to show you how to do it.

Dammit Jeff, now what ever I type looks funny. :P I've retyped this 3 times :D

Anyways - stripping a female is easy. Dale up at F.Fins told me how to do it, then said to come back up the next day & he'd show me.
I went home, tried it & viola- it was simple.
Here's how I did it -
Fish her out - put her in my dip&pour (filled of course) - took her over to a table - grabbed her (making sure my entire hand got wet) - held her with one hand -  gently stuck an ink pen in her mouth & pried it open - shook her above the dip&pour, while dipping her mouth in& out of the water, until all the fry were out.

Congrats Ski!

I've found using a straightened out paperclip or one tong from tweezers works pretty well for stripping.

Well thanks guys, i have watched a couple different video's on youtube about STRIPPING the female, (of her fry). And the thought did cross my mind, but i wasn't certain that the eggs had hatched yet so i just seperated each of them into there own 10 gallon tank and left them alone. Now im just waiting for them to grow...

I just use a toothpick.  First I dull it down a bit by rubbing it on something rough like denim jeans.

if the eggs are not hatched, you will need to place them into a tumbler

Hmmmm what is a tumbler, something i could make at home, or buy one somewhere. Is it a good idea to strip the eggs from the female, what if they aren't fertilized yet when you were to strip them. Seems better to wait it out to me, but i could be wrong.

they are fertilized before they pick them up.  Tumblers are easy to make

If you strip the mom (shut up Blair  :P) a day or 2 after she's holding you will have the highest yield, but you will have to put them in a tumbler.  If you wait 2-3 weeks and then strip her you'll still have more fry then if you let her spit them herself.
