Space heaters for room

For those of you that use a space heater to heat a room...

No concern on leaving them running all the time?

Kinda freaked out about the reputation of fires.

I don't.. only because I don't have a fish room yet. But depending on which kind you buy, many of the new ones have a safety shut off at a certain temp and then kick back on when the temp drops a certain amount. They don't stay on/heating all the time.

Plus the risk of fire decreases even more if you set them up and use them properly. Following the guidelines about where they should be placed, nothing within a certain distance from them, nothing placed over/on them, proper airflow around them to distribute the heat well, etc.


But I have had to use them in my house a couple years ago when my furnace went out and I had to wait almost 2 weeks to have it replaced. They do the job!

As April said... set them up properly & much of the risk goes away.

I leave mine on throughout the cold months.  It's set to a certain temperature & shuts itself off when needed.

I've got a "Mr. Heater" 30,000btu natural gas space heater that I just installed in late August and my electric usage has been cut on average of 15-20%.  The thermostat is battery operated so if there is a power outage it maintains temperature.  I love it !!!!  I've got a small fan on low keeping the heat moving and the tanks in the fishroom are all around 79 degrees.
