Time to fight the good fight! New World Keepers unite!
« on: October 19, 2014, 12:23:40 PM »
Seriously guys, I went to the auction yesterday, and was sad, it was my very first MCA event and out off 200 bags I saw god for auction a majority were angelfish, and Africans. I don't know about you guys, but for me angels and Africans are girly wimp fish.

I know there are breeders out there with some truly prolific monsters, lets flood the auction next November, with some truly glorious fish!

I believe I saw an oscar and a motaguense go through.  I realize these aren't glass bangers, but I did see a number of bags of apistos, nanoluteus, and a couple of other oddballs go through.

Sorry Devin,  I got up late & didn't bring any devils to add to the mix.

Besides that - most of us that have fry from New Worlds don't have them at sellable size yet.
I would expect to possibly see trimac, festae, carpintis, cubans,  tepehua, haitiensis,  citrinellus, dovii,  lyonsi, maculipinnis  & MAYBE even some minckleyi at the MCA winter auction in February.

I primarily keep dwarf cichlids of which there were few this time around. I still found the auction enjoyable. Lots of stunning angelfish, some hard to find plecos and of course some choice Rift Lake beauties. The MCA auction is still one of my favorites in the Michigan and southern Ontario region. Gotta make some time to catch a meeting this fall/winter.

Looking forward to the winter auction next year!

I bought the mota actually Marty, it was a steal of a deal. I'm just sad that u see a 6" Moba frontosa male go for nearly 50$ and that a stunning mota that I snagged for 15. I just figured there would be more than 15 bags of "real fish." I know some people like all thier fish to have the same body profile with slight variants of color patterning, but there are also those of us who like glass banging sumbitches.

I'd just like to see more glass bangers hit the block next auction. This is the MCA after all, not the Michigan Africans and Angels Association.

That's the thing... if people aren't breeding them & bringing them,  then they won't be there.

Exactly what Blair said.  If there is people in this area breeding them encourage them to get involved with it.  I know a lot of people are not going to bring nicer fish because a lot of the times people try really really hard to get it for next to nothing.

It's a catch 22.  People breed Central/South American cichlids and get $1 or less each for juvies, so they don't bring them, so they're not available.

I'm with you on the American cichlids being great species but because they're not primary colors, because of their adult size, and because they're so prolific with fry (for the most part), they're probably never going to have the mass appeal that some of the most common African cichlids do.

That's the issue we are running into, new world breeders have no incentive to bringing stuff since they go too cheap. I mean the electric blue Dempseys didn't even go above 25$ for a group of 5. When normally they are 18-24$ each everyday.

The electric blue jacks went for 80... It was something a lot of us were a little confused.

I was actually surprised by the amount of angelfish. I don't think I've seen so many at any other auction in the past year. And that plecos were flying out so cheap too!!

It was a good day, good auction, but not as nice of a mix as I've seen at past auctions.

Please don't let it deter you from coming back for future auctions! It was really nice meeting you!

There was a bag of these that went for $80 and then the other bag was around $30.
