Ugh, what a day!
« on: February 21, 2012, 10:58:30 PM »
Wake up this morning to a house that feels colder than usual.  Check the thermostat and the house is 67 (normally keep the house at 70).  Go downstairs, turn the furnace off and then back on, and that seems to get it working again.  Leave to go do some work, get a call 4 hours later from my mom who came over to babysit, who tells me the furnace is blowing cold air.

Call my buddy who's a hvac guy, and he gives me a few things to look for.

Get home after finishing my work, pull into my driveway, and my garage door clicker isn't opening the door.  Get out of the car, punch in my code on the keypad, and the door opens.  Walk inside the house and see my wife's clicker on the counter.  Not a good sign.  After digging around paperwork for 15 minutes, figure out that my mother or one of my son's friends must have hit the lock function on the main panel next to my garage service door, which locks out remotes.  Undo that, and go downstairs to look at the furnace.

Spend an hour and a half taking parts off of my furnace and cursing the fool who designed it because it's about as fun as working on a modern car engine with the way some of the parts are situated.  Check everything my buddy said to look for, clean a few parts and put everything back together.  Turn furnace back on, still no warm air.  Curse some more, call my buddy again, and he comes by to take a look.  20 minutes later, he figures out that the drain trap is clogged up, so we take it off and rinse all the gunk out and put it back on.  Turn it back on, furnace works.  At least I got lucky and it wasn't 15 degrees outside.

Furnace problems are no fun.  Glad you have heat.   :)

Definitely a positive way to look at the day.

Good to hear you got things working again! Could have been a lot worse.

70F on the thermostat?!  :o After years of keeping mine 55-60 before switching to wood this winter, now I find if I have mine above 67-68 I can't sleep because it's too dang hot!

I agree with Ron. In my old house we kept the propane furnace at 68. Much more and I couldn't stand it (my wife on the other hand could take 75 no prob).   ::)   In our new place we have a natural gas boiler and 3 different zones, but we're finding the house must be insulated better cuz we have them all around 64 and she feels plenty warm.
