quiet air pump
« on: October 07, 2014, 09:37:39 AM »
Any  recommendations on a virtually  silent air pump? I have a 125g and only a Koralia pump making surface agitation combined with out take from FX6. My I have 48 Tropheus in the tank. Now that they are starting  to grow I  want to make sure  the tank has good  oxygenation.

it is my understanding that Rena makes very quiet air pumps...or.....you could use something like a Danner Pondmaster AP20..a lot of smaller pumps do not do well on deeper tanks..the Pondmaster pumps are great for pumping larger volumes of air in deeper water....i have a couple of AP 100s running our fishroom..
and you can find them for under $100....

For single tank air pumps I have found the Tetra Whisper air pumps to be about as quiet as any pump out there. I can't stand any little noise while I sleep and I have a 55g tank with a decent size Whisper pump on it next to the bed and I can't hear the pump running. I can hear the bubbles breaking the surface, but not the pump.

If you are looking for a quality air pump that pumps out a ton of air go with Alita.  I went with the AL-6A.  It can supply enough air for a small fish room and is silent!

Hope this helps....

If you have decent filtration an air pump wont do much anyway.

Gas exchange - where the water dissolves oxygen and other gases from the air and releases excess carbon dioxide and other gases to the air - occurs over any and all surface area where the water has contact with air. By increasing the surface area of the water, each bubble gives the water further opportunity to release carbon dioxide and take up oxygen. However, this improvement from an air pump is shadowed by the improvement in circulation that the air pump can effect. The improved circulation will move highly oxygenated water from the surface lower in the tank allowing water with more carbon dioxide and less oxygen to the surface of the tank where id can release its carbon dioxide and take up oxygen. Of course, if you already have a good filter that is providing sufficient water circulation, then the benefit you will receive from an air pump is minimal.
