Help with Geophagus
« on: July 21, 2014, 09:31:06 PM »
Ok.. So I picked up 7 geophagus from the last auction (I think it was the greater Detroit one) not MCA. Anyway I can't for the life of me remember what they are.. I know for a fact they are not brasiliensis.. Not altifrons, surinemisis or tapajos.. I think the name started with an M..mi had never heard of them..

Anyway.. If anyone has an idea who is breeding Geos that may have sold some then.. Please let me know.

I will try to snap some tonight.. they are still pretty small but evidently not too small to breed.. They weeded themselves from 4 to 2 after I lost 3 in a community tank. So unfortunately yes.. I kill fish.. not on purpose of course. But at least now I know why.. they paired up and I have 30 or so wigglers in the tank with them..

They have a small tear drop near their eye and a spot on them.

Hopefully we can collectively sort these guys out.. LOL

Added pictures.. Not the greatest but I was standing on a box on one leg, holding onto a shelf snapping photos with a camero phone with one eye closed.. They chose the furtherest most point from me taking a picture that they possible could.

You can see they are very small and not fully grown.. perhaps in time they will reveal their true identity.. LOL

Thanks for the help.

Ok.. so sounds silly I am sure.. But about 10 years ago I bought a couple Juripari and then an Altifrons.. They were awesome..

I have been looking for the Red Head Tapajos, or other "true" Geophagus after mine all finally moved to the big tank in the sky.
And my wife REALLY liked the Altifrons.. So I am trying to find a group of the more difficult to find Geos to bring here locally, and then mix in a group of Uarus that I have wanted for about 15 years but never had a tank to put them in..

Call me crazy.. but I was set on a Geo and Uaru tank (big one) with driftwood and the like to have something different from what I currently keep.. Brasiliensis and Red humps are what I ended up with somehow. But so many people have kept these already. I want something different.  Looks like I need to find homes so I can find something a bit more rare.. And since all the fry seem to be doning quite well.. I will have a bunch of Brasiliensis to find homes for.. LOL

I am not 100% sold that what you got were geophagus brasiliensis would need some better pictures to be certain.  If they are in fact geophagus brasiliensis they are defiantly the most aggressive "earth-eater"  That I have had.   Ive kept about 10-12 different species.  That being said they were defiantly one of my favorites. loads of personality and they get very large.

Curious what "rarer" geophagus are you looking for and why?  Also if you are in need of Uaru I MAY be thinning my heard out a bit not sure what size or how many your looking for but I could possibly have a couple good sized ones and maybe a few more small guys.

What ever happened with these Brasiliensis? I have 3 and love them. They are very aggressive, aggressive for eartheaters anyways, and I assume thats what they were when you said a few were killed off. Hard to tell in the photos, but because of the stripe through the eye and lack of a real slope on the forehead, they were probably Brasiliensis as others said.
Let me know what they ended up being, and what you did with them?

Thanks

You sure they aren't Gymnogeophagus meridionalis? I believe there were a number of bags of Gymnos being sold under the name Gymnogeophagus El Norte that came from John Oyer. I was trying to figure out if I could squeeze another group of Gymnos in the fishroom but didn't have anything ready for them.
