Labetropheus Fuelleborni or Trtrewavasae and Saulosi
« on: June 10, 2014, 01:49:06 PM »
Would either labetropheus be compatible with Saulosi in a 75 gallon tank (48X18)?  I was thinking a small group (1 M/3 F) of the labetropheus.....and 1 or 2 M/6-8 f of the Saulosi.......

I like the Labetropheus because of the splotched females - while not brilliant colors, more attractive than the plain brown or silver of other females.

If I go this route, would I have room for a small group of White Labs? I am thinking this may be pushing the limits of the tank.

You should be fine.  Overstocking with good filtration and up keep on water changes and maintanence is better than understocking in my opinion.

I was worried about the Labettopheus males and Saulosi males being too close in color.

P.S.  I know there are no guarantees with these fish as they all have their own pesonalities and quirks.

Pseudotropheus msobo

Should you mix the two Pseudotropheus? Can't that be problematic? Possible crossbreeding?

Mine don't try and mate with the other cichlids females.  I never had a problem.

That is a good generalization to make. Erring on the side of caution is better than being careless, but it's not a hard and fast rule in all cases.

Much of the scientific research I've come across on cichlid mating triggers and their evolution highly supports that the female is the decision maker. She's typically looking for certain triggers such as body shape, coloration, patterns, etc.

For the particular species listed, the males look quite different from one another. The females are different as well to some degree. One should still be careful, but the risk factor for that particular combination is much less than a tank with Ps. msobo, Ps. saulosi, and Ps. demasoni (all males with a similar body shape and dark coloration on a blue background, with orange females (less the demasoni females).
