Phenochilus not eating and wasting away
« on: June 03, 2014, 09:55:02 PM »
I purchased a group of 16 P. Phenochilus "tanzania" juvenilles at the fall '13 MCA auction.  I have kept them mostly in a 75 gallon with other non-aggressive haplochromis-type grow-outs since then.  For the first few months they seemed very healthy.  Eating New Life Spectrum (NLS) pellets vigorously off the surface.

Early this spring I added a dozen or so A. baenchi - peacock juvenilles - to the tank.  In April my first phenochilus died.  It looked, for lack of a better term, like a runt; thin with a concave belly.  In the next month I lost almost half of them, down to 9 remaining fish.  There were no signs of aggression whatsoever.

2 weeks ago I moved the 9 fish to an otherwise empty 40 gallon breeder thinking that maybe they were too stressed in a mixed-species tank.  They seem to be behaving normally, no stress, but I still don't see them eating.   They seem to be getting thinner and thinner. Last week I lost another. I now have 8 fish left.

Water conditions are decent:  pH: 8.0, NH3: 0.0, NO2: 0.0, NO3: 5-10 ppm.  At feeding time I see them mouth food like they are hungry, but spit it right back out.  Right now I'm feeding only NLS "Cichlid" and NLS "Thera A" pellets, but I'm wondering if maybe I should try some frozen brine shrimp or maybe something else?  I have a lot of cichlid experience, but I don't remember ever seeing something like this before.  Anyone got any ideas?

I would try some other food.  My group does that from time to time for a few days and when I see them I lay off the NLS and feed them spirulina flakes and a little brine shrimp here and there.

Also, I have noticed with my group a species only tank works best.

The baenshi may have given them something.  My phenochilus are in a mixed species with Aulonocara, Copadichromis, Protomelas, and Mylochromis and they do just fine and breed regularly.

It sounds to me like they have something internal going on.  You've got them seperate, I'd treat their tank with metro (aggressively if they're not eating).

I would try some other food.  My group does that from time to time for a few days and when I see them I lay off the NLS and feed them spirulina flakes and a little brine shrimp here and there.

do they also die off from time to time?

Sounds internal to me too.  I'd hit them with some quick cure & if that doesn't change anything them use some metro.

It's been a while since I've kept them, but back when I did I never experienced anything like this (occasionally not eating or dying off from time to time).

From the timing of the events, I also agree that the peacocks might have brought in something that is afflicting them. Treating with metro might be a good idea.

Is there any chance you were overfeeding them? Sometimes I think people may overfeed fish and give them digestive issues.

Thanks guys. I'll hit the tank with a metro cycle tonight since I already have some on hand.

If it was something carried by the baenchi though, they are apparently not afflicted by it as they are growing rapidly and spawn frequently.

I was planning to treat the tank as had been suggested earlier, but I decided to see first if they would eat spirulina as Josh mentioned he does with his.  I was pretty shocked to watch them gobble it up!  I would not have taken this species to be vegetarian, but if it keeps them from dying who am I to argue? I'll eventually try and ween them back onto NLS, but for now I'm happy just to see them swallowing some food.
