Transporting Fish?
« on: February 05, 2012, 02:43:49 PM »
So im gonna be purchasing fish soon hopefully. Either at the auction on the 18th, or from whom ever might have what i will be looking for available... ??? Which im not sure yet what that might be. But anyhow, i have done my fair share now of transporting fish, but im wondering how everyone else goes about this and how "techie" are they. I just usually bring a couple coolers down and take my chances with them in the bags from wherever i buy.  :P :P

If i do make the auction, is sorta sucks cause i will have to make the trip back home that saturday, cause i will have no place to keep them overnight, nor would that be a good idea. Unless i didnt buy anything till sunday from someone.. I don't know yet. Jus wondering if anyone has any idea's/suggestions...  ???
Thanks in advance...
SKI..

For long trips I use coolers or styrofoam boxes&  for heat packs I use empty pop/water bottles filled with warm/hot water.
The longest Ive went using this has been 2days/3nights

For short trips I just use a styrofoam/ cooler.

I would get one of those ammonia absorber filter pads and cut them into nickel size squares.  Open the bags and place one of the squares inside to increase your odds of getting them home alive.

I have never heard of those ammonia pads? I have been successfull with quit a few bags of fish on the journey home from downstate in the past. Im not saying that those things wouldn't help, you think it would be wise just for the ride back home on that saturday? Maybe 3 1/2 to 4hrs or so? ???

I wouldn't worry about those for such a short trip. Maybe bring some bags, rubber bands, and water conditioner in case you need to re-bag anything. I personally just try to avoid buying fish that don't look like they are bagged sufficiently - leakers, ones without much air space, cloudy water, significant amount of poop in the bag, etc.

If the auction starts around 10am for example, expect that fish were probably bagged around 2-6 hours before, and they'd probably be fine so long as they were bagged properly and you get them in the tank by midnight as long as they don't get cold.

For keeping them warm, the hand/foot/body warmers that are sold in the hunting departments at Meijer/Walmart/etc usually go on sale at the end of the season (December/January). It's a great way to pick up "heat packs" for cheap! Sure they don't last as ones you might get from a fish supplier that sells 24-36-48 hour heat packs for shipping, they're more than adequate for 4-8 hours usually. I sometimes use them for the drive home from auctions.

If you happen to run across that certain character at the auction who usually has bags, water conditioner, bag buddies, and a full oxygen tank....you could maybe con him into rebagging anything in oxygen and the fish would be fine for a couple days....he even could bring heat packs. I'm sure he would be willing to do it for say, lunch maybe?  8)

Okay, but IF you left the styros home you would have room to buy maybe, let's see, a killer deal on a tank or complete set-up? But if you restrained yourself from buying tanks you could still stock up on styros AND a bunch of new fish  ;)
Hell, you could score another tank or two AND squezze the fish bags into the tanks for the ride home  :D
