Another Aqueon Pro - FAILED!
« on: February 25, 2014, 10:40:51 AM »
I am going to replace all my heaters as I can afford it.  I am done with Aqueon!

This time the fish are not coming back.  Lost all my Malasa Alto Comps that I have been growing out for a year.  And, I think the breeding group of Ruby Greens is hit real hard.

So pissed off about this.

This heater failed just like the other... int he off position, even thought the light was green... the temp in the tank was 60 at most.

10 heaters to replace... great.

Although I am sorry to hear about your issue with Aqueon, I have a positive note to pass along...

About a year ago, I was given a tank that included a 300 watt heater that was not working.  Even though I did not purchase it or have a receipt for it, they sent me a knew one.  Since then, I have purchased another 300 watt heater from Aqueon based on the professional handling of my situation.  I hope there is not a general problem with the heaters since all three of my tanks have Aqueon heaters.

I dont care how they handle it.  This is the second one that did the same thing within a couple months.  Both bought at the same time... less than a year old.

Last time I got lucky and all the fish in the breeding group survied... how I dont know.

This time it cost me a lot of money and the life of my fish.

I am done with Aqueon for anything and everything.

Time to replace all my heaters as I can afford it.

Would it be a good idea to add a thermometer with an alert if the temp drops below ___ temp?  Because unfortunately you may have the exact same problem with a different brand heater.  They're pretty much all mass-produced so two failures in a year's time is not shocking though a major frustration.  The problem is I've had 10 Aqueon Pro heaters in the last two years and none failed, compared to several of the Tetra brand heaters failing.  So which are more reliable?  We have too small a sample size to really say.

I'm sorry to hear that Ken nothing bums ya out in fish keeping like losing a number of fish at the same time (I can attest to that  :-[ myself). The suggestion of the temp alert thermometer is a good idea. I have Lifeguard temp alert digital thermometers on each of my three show tanks which have high and low temp alert settings. Just gives a nice piece of mind that I don;t have to look at the temp multiple times during the day.

Where did you get them from Steve?  How much were they?  Maybe  I can add them a couple a paycheck or something like that.

FWIW The lifeguard ones don't always work that well. I have 2 and the temps are always off on them.

I gotta totally disagree with that Dan, I have three of them and I also keep mercury ones in the tank even with the Temp Alert thermometers so I have two thermometers on each of my show tanks (I'm a bit OCD when it comes to thermometers on my tanks) and my Lifeguard Temp Alert are always within .5 to 1 degree F of the mercury ones. Mine are extremely accurate.  The small digital ones that are only a couple inches long I found to be way off (as much as 3 degrees F off) but the Lifeguard Big temp alerts I have are pretty much dead on.

Ken I got all mine from Dr Foster and Smith but you can also get them a few bucks cheaper sometimes on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Big-Digital-Temp-Alert-Celsius/dp/B004K82X1W

Mine aren't came to me new. One is actually stuck in Celsius also I am sure they are alright ones but if you are going to want something that is going to protect your stock I would go with a actually temperature control device with an alarm or one that can send you emails or texts.

Everyone likes/uses different things so no biggie. All I know is mine are pretty well dead on accurate and have been for the past 18 month+ so I'm happy with mine and would certainly suggest them to others.

Yeah I though I was going to be happy with them so I got 3... The idea behind them is cool but I don't use heaters in my tanks and the room stays warm around 78-82 depending on the day.
