What's your favorite parasite treatment?
« on: February 03, 2014, 10:42:29 PM »
So after a week or so of watching my fish flash and shake all the time, I've decided that it's not ich or water parameters. So, I've moved on to treating for parasites. What's everyone else use for parasites besides salt and heat?

Metronidazole: From Wet Thumb Aquatics

NFP METRO-PRO... Ingredients: pure metronidazole powder. Works well for hexamita (hole-in-the-head
disease) and chilodonella (body slime). It can also be used for ich in freshwater aquariums or protozoa
(heteropolaria) in koi ponds. It can be used for malawi bloat in african cichlids. Metro-Pro is safe for marine or
freshwater use. This product may be used in the feed or water. Will not harm biological filtration. The package
contains 43 doses (enough to treat 425 gallons one time).

Do you know if they're the only one that sells it ? Just curious since they're not very close to here.

You should be able to get Metro from most LFS,  I was lucky in that Wet Thumb is close to me and they had this product.  I have seen other people order it off the web as well.

I bought two small jars of it last time I ordered online. If you want you can swing by here tomorrow (Tuesday) and grab one of them so you can start treating them quickly.

Kees Pets had Metro also.

Well, they were actually sold out when I needed it, but that was months and months ago.

Preuss also has it if you are around the Lansing area.

A while back I used the Jungle brand parasite tabs to try to deworm my green spotted puffer.  I would put the frozen bloodworms in a cup, add tank water, drop in 1/4 of a tab, and let it infuse the food with the parasite treatment.  That seemed to work well for me.  Soaking their food would be better I think than just chucking the powder in their tank.

I will also say the other two times I tried to use the Jungle tabs the fish did not make it.  Either due to there being a different disease, or the fish being too weak/too far gone for the treatment to have effect.
