Gold nugget pleco?
« on: January 31, 2014, 01:58:41 AM »
Lately I've been finiding myself more and more into the different species of plecos for some reason. I never really knew there were actually so many different pleco species out there until I started to look them up and read about them. One pleco I am liking the looks of and I think I would like to get for the big tank once it is up is the Gold Nugget pleco. From what I have read about that one it says it only gets up to about 6" which is about as big as I want to go on a pleco in that tank because I have heard that really large plecos can be very aggressive.

I was just looking at some plecos for sale online and saw a Goldie pleco for sale which was 10" long. I always thought that "Goldie" pleco was just what some people called the Gold Nugget pleco? But this one I saw was 10" and from what I read the Gold nugget pleco only gets to 6". So are Goldie and Gold Nugget plecos two different species? When I google "Goldie pleco" the ones that come up look pretty much like the Gold Nugget pleco to me.

I was on a swing where I was going oddball pleco crazy.  But, they just dont like the hard water that I keep for the Africans.  I have given up.

With my well water being so hard and also having Africans, I will just stick to the not so exotic ones.

Right now I am down to a 6-7" Royal Pleco, 3" Vampire Pleco, little clown pleco, queen ansistrious (I know I spelled that wrong) pleco, a rhino pleco and a handfull of bristlenose.

I forgot one in there somewhere.

I was all off topic there kind of...

I am not sure if they are the same or not.  Best to go with the L numbers on them and get them from a reputable source.  Gold Nuggets are nice looking though!

I'm pretty sure they're different. Just from googling them it looks like the Goldie is l014 and gold nugget is l18

IIRC there's 3 L#s which are called goldies/gold nugget/similar name which I don't remember right now.

Do all your research going by the L# & also buy from a reputable source which uses L#s.

Goldie's and gold nuggets are different.  I can't give you L numbers off the top of my head I'm not really into plecos but I wouldn't put a gold nugget in with larger haps seems a bit risky.

Steve, check out plantetcatfish.com

L014 - Sunshine/Goldie Pleco
http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=161

L081 - Gold Nugget
http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=153

If you are going attempt to try one of these with Africans, you will most likely want to drop some food for pleco after the lights are off.

Steve,

When the MCA had it's meeting at Pete Durkin's, that is the one fish I did buy!  (Gold Nugget Pleco)...They can be somewhat expensive.  If we ever get a chance to go back to Pete's I would certainly entertain getting another...

Good Luck in your search..

Jon and crazycoolpeacocks are correct, the L 18 and L 81 plecos are known as a gold nugget.  The L14 "Goldie" tends to be more expensive and gets much larger.

This is where I ordered my LDA 33's.  Christine was very attentive when I had questions on feeding.  They were not eating well for the first week or two.  When ever I emailed her, I would get an anwer within a couple hours.  Alot of good suggestions.

Thank you all for the info, I'm still trying to learn all the different species and I always seem to forget the "L numbers" are more accurate when talking about plecos.

Jon great link 8) I saved that to my bookmarks so it will help me ID them in the future.

When I get ready to buy one I will probably get a hold of Dale at FF. I know he seems to specialize in them and the one time I was in his shop I was pretty impressed with the variety of plecos he had there.

Dale, Tony (treasurechestaquatics), and Pete Durkin are probably the three most knowledgeable people in the area when it comes to plecos.

Tony as in Grizzlys dad & Pete Durkin as in the Durkin's hatchery. (One of the major wholesale sellers in the area, not open to the public)
