Advice On All Male Show Tank For My Mom.
« on: January 27, 2014, 02:39:49 PM »
My mom always watches "Tanked" on Animal Planet every Friday night. She has been saying for a while that she wishes she had a tank she could look at. And on one episode of "Tanked" they did a cichlid tank but it was stocked with fish that weren't so appealing to the eye: and she said, "Cichilds are ugly." Well, after everything she has done for me I moved my 30 gallon tank over to her house and put it in the living room. I would like to show her that cichlids are NOT ugly and set her up with an all male show tank. What does everyone suggest for stocking this tank? It has been established for years so its not a new tank. I just need to know what to sock it with and how many to give her something she will really enjoy. I would like to stay with Peacocks and Hamps. Anyone of any advice? Anyone have any stock to purchase?

I think you will find most people are going to suggest a larger tank first off. 30g (guessing it's the 36" 30g?) is just not enough floor space the hold more than a few cichlids for an extended period of time even if they are peacocks.

Better to have a short life full of what you like doing, than a long life spent in a miserable way.

Not to burst your bubble but you are not going to be able to stock much in a 30. At minimum a 48" tank would work for a male show tank with more passive fish. You might be able to pull off one of the smaller peacock species breeding group in a 30 something like Aulonocara ethelwynnae, Aulonocara kandeense, Aulonocara maylandi, or maybe Aulonocara stuartgranti (Undu Reef). Id swing for 1 male 3 to 4 females. The males will also show more color this way seeing as they are the dominate fish in the tank.

Now for the subject of here seeing un-appealing fish on tanked. That isnt really a shocker to me. The fresh water fish they always get look like crap even 90% of the time because they deal with seagrest farms a lot of the fish from there come with sunken bellies and parasites. So maybe taking her to see fish at like belle isle would be a better idea so she can see what healthy cichlids look like. Last time I was there they had a nice tank set up with fish donated from local breeders.

Well, I have a 130 gallon I can move fish to if need be. Or I can move a 65 gallon to her house, its just a small house. The 30 gallon has a lot of filtration with sponge filters and under-gravel filter along with bio-wheel on the back. When I spoke to one of the breeders on here this weekend he told me that stocking this tank with show males would not be a problem at all. He showed me his 70 gallon tank and said I could but half the fish he had in that tank in a 30 gallon without a problem. His 70 had at least 15-20 plus fish,at least.

Who told you that? A 30 high 24 x 12 x 24 30 Gallon regular = 36 x 12 x 16 so a max he is telling you 10 fish can go in that tank? You will end up with a lot of crappy looking fish because they will constantly be picking at one and other. I think you are being misinformed. Fish that get 6 plus inches will not do well in that situation. It would be like me taking a 3 8 inch fosso putting them in a 20 long and say na they are good in there since its a 30 inch tank came from a 72 inch tank almost the same thing...

Some people will tell you anything to sell you some fish I tell you.

I have to agree.  30 gallon tanks are really good for show tanks for Malawi species.  Tangs yes (depending on species), but not Malawians or Vic's.

I don't want to name names. Well if I keep the 30 gallon here for her, what could I stock it with so she has a lot of colorful active fish to look at? Or, if I bring my 65 gallon over here what should/could I stock that with?

Look as some of the fish I listed off you might be able to pull off more then one male with some of those or you could go with just yellow labs maybe if you want a ton of yellow.
