Heater failure

Well, had a heater fail... fail off.

Tank was 60 degrees.

It was our breeder Ruby Red Males too.  Some females were swimming vertically and the male was on his side barely breathing.

I tossed in another heater right away and then added about 7-8 gallons of HOT water.  Then let the heater raise it up the rest of the way.

I would have bet money he would have been dead... nope!  Alive and well this morning!

Great that they survived.  Bummer about the heater.

I cant believe they all survived... so far.

2 males and 7 females.  Wonder if the females that are holding will still have fry?

Also have two Alto Comps in there and three clown loaches.

I would keep an eye out for ick especially on the clown loaches with that drastic of a temperature drop.  But, you may be fortunate and not have to deal with that.

Glad to hear they are all okay Ken. I know the feeling to well when you look at the thermometer and see that super low reading. Just a  few weeks ago I got up in the morning and saw my mbuna tank temp was 68F, heater was fine but I must have somehow bumped the switch on one of the power strips right before I went to bed which shut off the heater and filter Makes ya freek out when you see the temp so low.

I knew the second I turned on the light and saw one of my best looking fish on his side, stuck under a rock.  Then I saw the females swimming all strange.  So, I stuck my hand in to touch the male to see if he was alive... and immediately knew what happened.

My basement is cold in the winter... real cold.  I know the temp hit 60, maybe even lower.  This tank is only about an inch from the cement floor.

It was so sad seeing it barely breathing and on its side like that.

I use Aqueon Pros too.  So far so good and I've used probably 10 of them and have 4 running currently.  Contact them - I think they have at least a year warranty maybe 2 years.  They should replace it at least.

I picked up some cheap temp probes from Petco clearance - might be worth buying a couple of those.  They beep if the temp gets too low.

Sorry about your luck Ken, but glad they are doing ok.  I have had 4 heaters do the same thing this week.  They light up like they are working, but no heat coming from the element.  If you still have the receipt you should be able to work with Aqueon to ship it back and get a replacement.
