Hydro-Sponge filters - regular or Pro

I'm looking to get some Hydro Sponge filters for extra filtration and for a fry tank.  Would you recommend the regular sponge model or the Pro model with reticulated foam?

I think the reticulated hold up better and clean out easier. I use the reticulated when I make my own sponges and prefer it over other foam.

The reticulated style foam I have for my hamburger mattenfilters and it does hold up well.

When I have bought new Hydro sponge filters and/or replacement sponges, I've always gone with the standard model sponge. I'm not sure what current prices are, but in the past, for the price I've never justified buying anything different. I think the reticulated will have a higher flow rate, but I'm not sure that's really necessary for this type of filter.

I've also always bought the largest filters that'd fit in the tank. It's like buying a pizza; for each step up in size you get a whole lot more volume. All my tanks 16" tall or taller have HS-V.

I had always used the regular Hydro Sponge filters in the past but switched progressively over to the Pro reticulated style ones for a couple of reasons.  They are rated for much higher bio loads per the manufacturer and I've seen them work effectively in over-stocked goldfish tanks at LFSs; they are MUCH easier to clean, and they last A LOT longer in my experience.  They do cost a little more but their advantages make the extra initial cost worthwhile particularly when I don't have to replace them as often.  The standard foam clogs faster and reduces the flowrate of oxygenated water - what the beneficial bacteria living on and in the foam need to thrive.  I believe that is their biggest benefit and why they can reportedly handle higher bio-loads.  One should always over filter in my opinion and the Pro series Hydro Sponge filters provide that extra margin of safety.

Another thing I like about the pros is that they're heavier & easier to keep from floating after cleaning
