I have had cichlids for almost 3 months now. Getting very excited to get my first spawn. I'm curious, what was your first, and how long did you have them before they produced for you.

Yellow labs, took about 6 months. Wasn't wanting to breed anything but it's cool when it happens. There's 10 of them and they are about 1.25"-1.5" now and around 6-7 months old.

First cichlid tank - 29 gallon with 2 red zebras, 2 electric yellows, and 2 acei.  8)

About 2 months into it, 1 red zebra stopped eating. After a couple weeks it looked like she had a broken jaw. 2 weeks later she was eating again - whew!  :)

1-2 weeks later, OMG there's a tiny fish in a rock crevice!  :o
Looking hard, I found a second one also and into a breeder net they went.

2-3 weeks later, red zebra isn't eating, and then the jaw looked out of wack again.  :(

... and then I figured out what mouthbrooders are and the mystery of the fry appearing.  ;D

True story.  ;)

Similar story with a Red Rubens peacock.  Had them about 3 months.  55 gal tank with a silicone 3d background inside the tank.  I was cleaning the tank and found this "skinny fish" with a lumpy jaw.  Thought it got trapped behind and injured itself, so pulled it from behind the background.  Found it behind the background the next day, and the next day.  Then I did a little research when had the vague recollection that some fish are mouth brooders.  :)
