Thinking about building tanks again
« on: October 28, 2013, 03:56:51 PM »
Hey folks,
This is Brandon from Over The Edge

We are thinking about getting back into building aquariums. How does a 50 long glass aquarium for $65-$70 or a 50 breeder for the same price sound? Also considering custom glass tops. Thoughts, opinions much appreciated

My only concern is that you will have stiff competition from Petco/Pet Supplies Plus when they do their dollar a gallon sales.  The rest of the year it's a fair price for a new tank I think.

Especially for the 50 breeder (I assume that's 36x18x20?) because that size is harder to find.

Custom glass tops could be a thing because Lowe's etc is crazy expensive for nice glass (though sometimes I personally end up using thin glass to get by until I find a better lid).  Glass shops sometimes do custom tops for fair prices, but that depends a lot on where people are.  There's several near me SW of Detroit...I imagine the further from a metro area the harder to find a good glass shop?

I saw on your website that you sell mostly wholesale, are these prices for wholesale customers or for one-off retail sales?

A custom 55 we sell for 102 so that price isn't bad

I would partner with the non chain pet stores.  They don't make a whole lot (if anything) on tanks, so if you're providing quality at a more affordable price it might be worth it to them.  Perhaps even sell in stores on consignment, since my guess is that they make more on fish, food, and equipment than they do on tanks.

We will be going directly to the public with these tanks so anyone would be able to get those prices. We will be doing pickup orders only, at least for right now.

I know we are a little ways out of the metro area but i think people will drive a little out of their way to save money, especially in this economy

When petco runs those deals, We were thinking of offering deals like if you buy one of our lights or plates, etc. get your tank at a dollar per gallon. Stuff like that. I think There's a lot of ways we could compete with that dollar per gallon sale.

The main reason why we're debating getting back into building tanks is so we can help move more of our other items like our lights, plates, stands, racks, etc..

Would you make cube tanks that aren't ridiculously expensive?  I've been looking at "not standard" size tanks and jeez oh petes they are expensive I'm assuming it's because they are not mass produced.

Sounds good and makes sense.

I would second this.  I really like the 24x18 size and 24x24 size right now but they are quite pricey unless you buy used.

We do plan on doing some custom tanks. What size cube tanks would you be interested in? what would be a reasonable price in your opinion?
