What is the smallest Julidochromis species?
« on: September 16, 2013, 11:53:45 PM »
From what I have been able to discern by looking stuff up on the internet, it seems that Julidochromis transcriptus is likely the smallest type of Juli. I'm curious to see what people who have experience keeping them have to say though.

I've been toying with the idea of getting into Julies and I'd like to see what my options would be were I to try it out in a 30 gal tank.

Thanks.

This is a great place for info:

I'd say probably a three way tie between transcriptus, ornatus, and marlieri gombe at 2-3".  Dickfeldi around 4".  Then regani and marlieri (except gombe) can even get 5".

Not sure what the length is on a 30 gallon tank.

I've kept J. ornatus and J. transcriptus. Ornatus were happy as a pair in a 24" long tank. The transcriptus pair did alright in a 30" length with height (29 gallon - 18" tall) for the male to escape the female when she was grumpy. They did even better in a 48", though I know the popular opinion is that is beyond necessary.

I would probably go with a 36" 30-gal long, I've a pair of them set up now and I like them.

FWIW - I have a 75 setup with 25 Cyps,  a pair of Compressiceps, 6 Petricola cats & 9 dickfeldi..  Everybody lives in it harmoniously,  except for chasing off their own species.

IME J. ornatus and J. transcriptus are the smallest species in the Julidochromis genus.

Are the dickfeldi adults? Have they paired off at all?

they're 2-2.5"  I haven't noticed any spawning.  But, there's two pairs. One  at each end of the tank.

As they get older, I'm not sure 9 in a 75 gallon will work out that well.  :-\

the plan is to wait for a pair to spawn & move the pair to my Front tank & sell/trade the remaining ones.
