Cucumber, Zucchini, Peppers, ???
« on: August 07, 2013, 10:59:10 AM »
So, what vegetables do you put in your tanks?

So far we have just used mainly zucchini and cucumber.  They devour the cucumber easily, I think its softer than the zucchini.

Going to try some squash from the garden tonight or tomorrow.
I heard about peppers also.

What else do you put in your tank?

Do you do anything to the cucumber before adding it to the tank or just wash, slice and drop it in?

I just wash it, cut it into pieces and then use those clips with the suction cups and stick it to the side.

Usually all that is left is the skin... sometimes that is gone also.

I boil mine and drop it in, but mine won't eat it unless it's peeled. They're spoiled now because the first time i gave it to them I boiled it and now they wont eat it any other way.

Boiling veggies makes them sink...but can also destroy some (much?) of the nutritional value.  I'd just stick a fork in whatever it is and drop it in.  Or get fancy and buy one of those 'pleco screws' - basically a corkscrew that's supposed to be aquarium safe.  Make sure the chunks aren't so big you have a huge mess if they don't eat it all - start with small pieces and work your way up to gauge how quickly it gets eaten.

We just cut slices that are thick enough to just fit in the suction cup clips and it holds them in place.

They work really well.

I've used frozen peas and popped them in a for a quick blend in the blender,  then I just droped the little chunks into the aquarium. Fish loved it... I read somewhere that peas are very good for the digestive system...

Tried Zucchini but ended up with a mess, too soft.  Tried cucumber, it was much better and the fish devoured it..

Also tried romaine lettace but the fish didn't know what to make of it.

How is zucchini too soft, but cucumber is not?  Zucchini is pretty hard.

Yeah, I don't have a clip so I had to boil it to make it sink. I had no idea it took away from nutritional value. Thanks for the tip!
