Heartbroken
« on: July 30, 2013, 06:34:50 PM »
Just returned home Sunday from 2 weeks vacation. Made sure I did everything I could for my fish before I left, spent $150 in the best auto feeders, lowered water levels to give more O2 for them, shut heaters off, everything I could. What I didn;t plan on was a massive storm which knocked the power out for 4 days when it was 95f. I lost my entire all male peacock tank with my 9 favorite peacocks, 2 awesome hybrid cats, 3 snyo cats and 2 beautiful albino male plecos I got from a member here. If no one was a round I swear I could cry :-[

I'm trying to find the good in it because some how all 23 fish in my Mbuna tank, my beta and cory cats in the beta tank, and all my 6week out baby lab fry somehow again all odds not just survived but are all happy and healthy thankfully. But losing my entire peacock tank just breaks my heart.

BTW I have some massive storm damage to my yard and such, I'll post some pics later.

:(   Yeah, I'd definitely be grabbing some Kleenex.  :'(  So sorry for your loss.  There's no way to plan for everything.   The bright side is that the others survived.

Hopefully you have insurance for the damage but nothing will bring back your prized fish .... you probably nurtured them from fry.  Very sad indeed.  Likely one or two died, fouled the water and then ...  snowball effect.  Maybe someone from the MCA or a friend or relative could help watch your fish for future trips.  Good luck with the survivors.

Yep Thanks Rich, Being still somewhat new (only a year back) to the hobby I needed some help with what best way to restart the tank to get it going again and Rich called me within 5 mins of PM'ing him my #...I can't even tell you guys how cool this website is and the help here is flat out amazing. I really appreciate all you guys, Rich, Marty, Blair, Tony all you guys that have helped me have been just flat out awesome over the past year. I lost all my fav peacock, but now I have plans to make that tank even better than before so give me a few weeks and we'll get it back up.

Thanks for all the well wishes guys I appreciate it.

BTW- anyone with any nice peacocks for sale within 20 miles of the Royal Oak area let me know, I'll be restocking in the next week or so and would rather use MCA guys than other sources, thanks.

Sorry to hear about the losses Steve. Hang in there - it seems to happen to everyone eventually at one time or another.

On the bright side, you don't have the big tank stocked yet do you?

In the last heat wave I had my fishroom dehumidifier get stuck on at one point. The warmest tanks were 92F-96F and the coolest appeared to be around 87F-88F. I lost almost a dozen cichlids, mostly larger fish. I think that the larger fish have a more difficult time with it due to lowered O2 availability. Larger body mass and their metabolic rate probably don't help either. Cold water changes got things on track and I don't trust the dehumidifier to turn on/off by itself anymore.

That tree coming down "really sucks" x2. Hopefully insurance helps with some of the cleanup cost and replacement for what got damaged.  :(
