Honduran Red Points, anyone else here breed them?
« on: July 09, 2013, 01:43:54 AM »
Hello. I am new here and looking for others that love New Worlds. I have just had my Hondurans breed for the first time and they are just over 3 to 4 months old, I got them at the end of April and they were 1/2 inch at the time. Is this normal for them? also it looks like they had a huge brood from what I have learned about them as there are at least 100 fry. They are everywhere and the parents are doing a great job with them.

Yes I breed them as well as many other species. Have a bunch of fish that are pairing up right now and should have spawns from them in the near future. Also I am located in Grand Rapids.

Do you know if it is normal for them to breed as young as mine did? like I said they have to be around 3 months, I got them the end of April and their brood has to be a week old now.

Not uncommon for those cichlids. Mine haven't bred that fast but have definitely bred within being 6 months old.

To say they are easy breeders is an understatement.  In 2006 I purchased a half dozen HRP's at a Grand Rapids auction.  After co-existing with others in a 65 gal. tank for several months, would you believe, I had 3 pairs spawning in the tank, with each pair taking care of their progeny.

They do get quite colorful during the spawning dress (and not so bad otherwise) and I certainly enjoyed the experience.
