Do you let people come over to buy fish?
« on: December 21, 2011, 08:48:27 AM »
Years ago i have people coming & going in the fishroom !!!  Bad idea, Yes Reason being some guys came in and in a few days i'm lloking for this & that and never found them. Small head filters. About 6 of them. And then one day i go down stairs where the fishroom is,,,,,,,And all the fish in one tank are all GONE !! And we never found out who took all my breeders of Vc10's. Very few people come in now.

That's horrible, but it's the same reason I'm pretty particular about who comes over. A neutral meeting site is always best IMO.

That would be devastating

I appreciate being one of the chosen few, Frenchie

In regards to who's breeding what, I think its a good idea.  The MCA leadership will just need to make sure everyone keeps their information up to date.

As for being robbed, that sucks.  Unfortunately it happened to me too a few years ago when my leg was broken.  They where mittenstate members too.  Too many people came over to keep everyone name straight and couldn't figure out their screen names or I would have posted a warning at that time.
I used to be a people person... but people ruined that for me.

I have to say, I would never have a bunch of people "coming and going" in my home. I'll have people come over of course, just not more than I could handle. Of course, you'd have to have some big cojones to try to steal something from me.  lol

Although not as large as Superturtleman,  I can say this, if you stole from me you would not be leaving by the same manner you arrived.  I guarantee you'll be staying in town a few nights compliments of the local "hotel"

I tend to get as much info on people before they arrive at my house and do some background checks.  I am no too reluctant to mention when I am out of town because for 1 I tend to lie a bit on the dates and 2 my neighbors are quite capable of watching my house when I am gone.  Also my wife can shoot and will on top of it.

I also prefer to meet at predetermined locations because it prevents the whole issue as well as is easier for most people because of my location.  Also just because I am comfortable people coming over after I do my homework doesn't mean the wife is.  I have asked to see peoples set-ups and sometimes sense their reluctance and as soon as they begin providing excuses I cut in and make sure they know it is completely understandable and needs no explanation(s).  Its your home if you are uncomfortable with it no one should take offense.  If they do definately exclude them from you visitor list.

To date I have had no issues but obviously it could and in fact has happened to some.

That long winded rant said, I'd like to say its a great idea.  I like keeping it updated as I have breeders I don't breed because of room issues but if I knew there was a demand I would breed them again.

I don't know if it's just been good luck or if I just project I'm not going to take any crap attitude (with the notable exception being Jeff), but I've had easily in the hundreds of people over to my house to buy one thing or another (fish, equipment, tanks, etc.) and the only problem I've ever had was people trying to lowball me on what they wanted to pay.  Granted, there have only been a couple of occasions where there were more than two people at my house at a time.

Frankly, the only problems I can think of is people calling and then not showing up (I have a one strike and you're out policy there unless someone was dying).

And then recently had a jerk that had me buy a couple hundred dollars worth of holey rock for him down in Ohio and then he decided he wasn't going to buy it (again just told him to not bother calling me anymore).

That's definitely annoying. I've got a personal rule that I don't buy anything for anyone (with very limited special exceptions) unless they give the cash ahead of time. The same goes for selling. I typically give a 1 chance no-show with a darn good reason and then add them to the black list. I don't recall the screen name at the moment and will withhold the actual name, but a kid burned me twice and wasted close to a good 4 hours of my time between driving and waiting. Stuff like that keeps me from posting in the for sale section more often.

If I am selling, I normally like to pick a location that is convenient for both parties.  I don't like people coming over and then asking me over and over about buying other fish or plants that I am not selling.  I like to show my tanks and fish off but try to keep visitors to a minimum.

I have never had a problem with people taking anything from my fish room and shocked that people would steal from someone's tanks.

This is a great subject to talk about.  I do alot of business on craigslist and have meet my fair share of weirdos.  My wife hates strangers in the house.  This has been discussed alot.  I don't trust people any farther, then I can throw them.

Lol, Ryan " don't trust anybody further than you can throw them "  I use that expression alot,  especially when dealing with my X-wife

As far as somebody stealing from me... I make sure most people know what I do for a living.
I may not be the biggest guy, but I sure know where to put a missing thief.  ;)
