Filter help
« on: June 26, 2013, 11:17:33 PM »
I have been running a marine land hot magnum 250 gph on my 60 gallon tank for over two months now. Love it. I decided I wanted to added another to my 60 gallon tank to increase the filtration. I decided I wanted to run a second one so I bought another. Now I assembled this thing and I hear the motor running but no water pumping. I thought I assembled something wrong or it wasnt sealing good, so took it apart and reassembled probably 5 times. Then I decided to google it and I think my issue is a cracked impeller magnet? This is brand new, how does the magnet get cracked? And I'm going to make the assumption this is why it's not running? It cracked on opposite sides one side a large crack and the other not as much!! Goodness...

Try taking the impeller from your currently running filter (if I'm assuming correctly that they're the same model) and put it on the one with the cracked magnet.  If it doesn't work, either the motor is bad (which is not very common) or you don't have a good seal.  If it does, you know you just need a new impeller.

Or you could take the impeller with the cracked magnet and put it on your currently running setup to verify whether or not the impeller is working.

Another trick is to smear a little bit of vaseline on the o ring that seals the filter to see if that helps create a better seal.

If it's brand new, it's strange that it's cracked. I haven't looked at mine in quite a while, but I don't recall it looking like that. Taking it back to the store if possible might be the best course of action.

FWIW, sometimes vaseline can deteriorate some rubbers. I don't recall specifically which, so I just try to avoid using it in general. For my HOT I just dip the rubber seals in water when I put it together.

Just for future reference, if you're not getting pumping off a new filter make sure the impeller magnet is not cracked. If its cracked it won't work. If a magnet gets too hot during drilling by the manufacture, it can crack. I have returned it to the LFS and they are replacing the whole unit. The magnet cracking is rare, but it does happen.

Also note the filter may run briefly and will likely be loud. I presume the magnet cracks at some point after start up from the electric field hitting the magnet.

I have my new filter up and running. What I've noticed is the older one (only by couple months) doesnt have as much flow as the new one?!? I've cleaned the older one, so what gives?
