Breeder Listings
« on: December 20, 2011, 12:40:10 AM »
I have an idea that might or might not work on the forum. I am new to the hobby and looking for particular fish, to start my first cichlid tank. I would love to have access to a listing of different breeders in the area, with details on what cichlid's they breed, how often they become available and similar information. I think it would be benefical for the new members to the hobby as well as those looking for a particualr species to round out their tanks. Just an idea to toss around that might help make this site even a better resource to those in the hobby.

Good suggestion.

I think that maintaining a list of people's names/usernames/locations/general species they focus on is a good idea.

With regards to specific species and availability, I think it'd be difficult to keep up to date. For that portion relying on people posting their own ads in the For Sale section of the MCA forums might be best.

While it's a good idea in theory, it's another matter altogether to get people to list what they have and maintain that list.  I would suggest doing a search of the for sale area and sending a pm to the member if there's something you're interested in.

Better yet, if you're looking for something but don't see it listed anywhere, post in want to buy.  You'd be surprised how helpful people can be!

It is a good idea though. Maybe just keep a list of people who breed and their general area and someone could contact them to see what they may have at any given moment. Just another venue to help sellers and buyers.

I posed this question to gauge interest and to see if it would be acceptable. I also appreciate all the input you guys have posted. From this input I would suggest the following:

Breeder Name/Nick: ______________
Location: _____________
Contact Info: _________________ (email / phone if the breeder wants it published)
Breeding: _______________ (list of species they breed)
Notes:  ________________ (any additional information the breeder would like to note)

I would restrict this to not showing stock available, but what in general the person breeds. It could be handled as a sticky in the for sale section and updated as people change what they breed or if they are getting out of the game. While I am new to the hobby, I am not adverse to assisting in the creation of this. I am a full time student, and can defiantly make some time to make sure this is done correctly and kept up to date.

On a side note, I can't wait to meet you all at the next meeting so that I can continue to learn about this wonderful hobby. Have a good Christmas all and Happy Fish Keeping.

We're getting off in a different direction, so I created a new topic in General Discussion regarding letting people come over to your home to buy fish.

I think its a good idea.  The MCA leadership will just need to make sure everyone keeps their information up to date.  Probably contacting everyone monthly and follow up to make sure its updated.  Sounds like something the MCA Pres should volunteer do it.   ;)

I don't think it works like that. But I'm sure you'll do a great job insuring the breeder list information is always up to date.  ;)  ;D

I know it has been a while since this topic was brought up...

But, a Google Document could be used for this I believe.  It would be open for everyone to edit and you would just need to put a date next to your name to let people know how current the listing is.

Just another idea.
