What genuses are part of the hap family?
« on: May 18, 2013, 10:21:28 PM »
I have an all male hap and peacock tank and I was wondering which genus's are part of the hap family. And are Pundamilia nyereri and Astatotilapia calliptera haps? Thanks for any help, and feel free to share links that may help.  :D

No way man. Cichlid forum and look at species profiles to get a better idea. Those are both Victorians.

Hap is not a very descriptive term...it basically means not Aulonocara and not Mbuna, it is used for non-malawi fish too, so yes your two victorian species are haps but not in the way most people refer to hap/peacock tanks specifically.  Most people would avoid mixing malawi, tanginyika and victoria.

What types of fish to people typically keep in hap/peacock tanks then? What about a Nimbochromis venustus?

Nimbochromis is a malawi hap (a relatively aggressive one).  Like danielratti said, I'd head to cichlid-forum and peruse their species profile section, possibly join their forum and propose a desired stocklist and see what they say,  There is a lot of knowledge and experience on that forum.

Here are a couple of sites that will give information about various cichlids.

http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/african_cichlid_genus_gallery.php

http://malawicichlids.com/

This site will also let you put in your tank parameters, and add fish.  If there is going to be a conflict, it will flag it.  Fairly useful.

Lots of knowledge here also.  Post up the questions.

To start listing fish would take forever.

But definitely stick to similar fish or you will be separating later on.

That's from experience.

You will need a bigger tank for a venustus. I did one in a 4 foot 100 before and now am trying another in a 6ft tank. He is doing good but I think that is from the other larger fish in the tank who keep him in line.

I didn't mean to say there wasn't, here, I'm guessing many of us participate on both forums.  I simply meant that this site is mainly targeted to individuals within MI, where the other has no geographical target and therefore would likely have more members who may have experience with the particular fish/mix that the OP is interested,  I certainly didn't mean to suggest he shouldn't post in both forums  :)
