I was wondering what fish would make good tank mates for Bifasciatum. I was hoping a pike cichlid would go good...somehow i feel ill get shot down on that one.
I'm hoping for suggestions other than....
Green terror
Texas cichlid
Convicts
Jack Dempsy
Jags
Cutteri
Red Devil
Pikes & GTs are SA & I'd stay away from them as SA tend to be milder tempered & like darker/softer water.
Texas - too aggressive, the Carpintis would be better. Check out the Escondido & Vonthilleo variants. Deppi, Poza Rica / Cazones would be good too.
Cryptoheros- many, if not all the Crypto species would work. But, you will have to be careful & add them at the right time & size. They top out around 4-6" where Bifa can get up to 16"
Thorichthys species - same as Cryptos
Salvini - pretty much the same as Thor& Crytos. But, they are MUCH more aggressive
Pearsi & Bocourti would be good ones to mix in. But, a 125 is too small to mix either & Bifa together as adults.
Other Vieja /Paratheraps species - these will work also. But, I would guarantee you end up with hybrids.
Nicarguensis would be a good one. But, again they wouldn't be long term unless you upgrade the tank.
Amphilophus - stay away from them except for Lyonsi
Astaheros - these would work for awhile, but you will need sand for substrate.
Bartoni & Tetracanthus /Cubans will work for some time, if bought while they & the Bifa are still small & the same size.
Jack Dempseys - too ugly & common anyways
Parachromis species - these will grow faster than the Bifas & end up eating them.
Festae - these will work when young, but 125 is too small if you have pairs of them & Bifa
