Is this a problem with fish?

I know excessive breeding of "family members" in say dogs will end up getting you mutants.

Is this an issue with fish? 

The Albus that we want to try to breed are not the easiest to find.  Will we be able to keep good looking males and females to add to the colony, or will this cause problems/defects, etc?

I've read (not experienced) that some fish are more prone to defects like brichardi if you keep breeding the same bloodlines with each other.  Probably not a bad idea to introduce fresh blood if possible.

It all depends on what you're trying to do.  If you're trying to breed out some gene/trait in a fish, that's more or less the route you want to go.  If you're trying to keep a good gene pool and trying to keep a "wild" looking fish, then diversity is your friend.

If you do some reading about line breeding, one of the steps to to breed off spring back to the parents to try to "lock" in a trait.

Look up line breeding, for tons of info.

FWIW- I've noticed that you get deformation quicker in Centrals when siblings spawn compared to Malawi.

Thanks for the tips.

We are doing this more as a hobby.  The males are not even full size not full color yet. 

So, I think we will just see how things go and try to get the best looking fish we can out of them.

With the quality of the Yellow Labs I saw at our last auction,  IMO you don't even need WC. Although I'm sure getting your hands on some now wouldn't be too hard.
