I know a lot of you are going the sponge/box filter route

When I set up my tanks after I recover from my surgery, I want to go bare bottom and sponge/box filters on all the tanks in the rooms. Then I figured Once a week i would put a ac 110 on the the front and "clean/polish" the water.

Of those of you that do the sponge only route how do you keep your tanks so clean with out having to do a water change every day or 2?

Weekly water changes are the only thing I have done with bare bottom tanks and not over feeding. You could run one sponge with a powerhead on it and another with just the airline.

I just don't get the bare bottom, foam filter tanks if you don't have dozens of tanks to power/heat.

I would much rather have a natural looking tank. 

Why the choice to go minimalist?

The tanks I'm speaking of are fry/grow out tanks in the "room" all the tanks through out the rest of the house are aqua scraped and have canister or job filters. One day in the near future you can stop over and take a look.

One of the main reasons for a bare bottom tank is to allow you to see all the waste. Especially in a fry tank where you need to be removing the waste every day.

ken I'm not so much trying to breed but do more growing, get fry grow them up and move them. You are correct I do change my mind often lol

I use sponges in my fry grow out tanks with bare bottoms and perform weekly water changes and gravel vac the bottom.  I clean the sponges out every other week.

Grow out something I like.  :-)

I cant seem to keep a tank empty long enough to become a grow out tank.   >:(
