Nerite snails
« on: March 16, 2013, 12:44:42 AM »
Anyone have, or ever tried nerite snails in their Mbuna tank? Just been looking for a way to keep a bit of the algae down in one of my tanks and wondered is the Mbunas would eat or go after the nerite snails if I got a few of them?

Mbuna are predominantly herbivores.  They might ingest a few tiny baby nerite snails while grazing on algae but they are unlikely to eat any snails intentionally.  Now, I have seen some fish that don't normally eat snails, go after the meat if you want to crush the shells first.   Can't say as I've ever seen mbuna do that.  I'd recommend a couple bristlenose cats.  They'd be faster and more thorough than most snails.

The other thing about snails is you'd better be sure you've got nerite snails and not Malaysian trumpet snails.  A few weeks ago I thought I had nerite snails only to discover I had Malaysian trumpet snails.  Other than cockroaches, I don't know any other species than these guys who are more difficult to control or eliminate!  To paraphrase a Dos Equuis commercial, "I don't often have algae problems but when I do, I prefer bristlenose cats.  Stay thisty, my friend."

I have about 30 Nerite snails in my 125 gallon Neolamprologus Brichardi species tank and they work great.  They get all, but the most stubborn algae.  From what I understand they only breed in Salt Water, so the smallest one I've purchased has been about 3/8" diameter with a hard shell.  Therefore, hopefully they would survive.

All the best !!!  :D

True, however they can and will lay eggs even in freshwater, so keep that in mind if eggs here and there will bother you as far as how your tank looks.  The eggs just don't hatch, as I recall.

I have mystery snails in one of my 30gallons.  Started out with two and i am guessing I have close to a thousand now.  Thinking about pulling all the gravel and sails out and dumping them in a pond at work  just too many now.  They do keep the tank clean.

Yes, your absolutely right, they do lay some eggs on the glass.  Although, for me it's a worthwhile trade-off, since they keep the tank so clean.
