NLS Cichlid + Coffee Grinder = Fry Food?
« on: January 29, 2013, 10:22:18 AM »
Been looking into fry food and then got to wondering if I can just grind the NLS Cichlid food I already have into a powder. Would this be alright for the fry? I already use the grinder for making chicken feed smaller, why not fish food?  ;D

Yes that'll work.  You can also grind up other foods & mix them into your NLS powder. (Just grind everything separately )

Speaking of a coffee grinder,  I used one last night to gring up some frozen peas.  I read somewhere that it is a good idea to feed your Cichlids veggies (Peas, Cucumber, Zuccini, Romaine Lettace etc etc) has anyone tried this.  My Peacocks are still relatively small and I was worried that a whole pea might do some harm....

I find enough dust at the end of a container of pellets or flake that I've never found it necessary to grind any, but I don't see there being any harm.

What kind of chickens do you have that require grinding chicken feed smaller?

As for the veggies, sure you can, but often it needs to be blanched, and IIRC peas are commonly de-shelled. I feed excess romaine from the garden when in season, but I don't go out of my way to purchase it otherwise since I feed a spirulina-based flake to nearly everything I keep. (For lettuce no blanching is necessary and magnetic algae scrapers work great to clip it to the side of the tank - my fish don't seem to eat from a big piece if it's just floating about.)

I raise bantam silkies, cochins and seramas. The chick starter is a bit large for them for the first few weeks so I grind it up until they can handle it better. Not as rough on their insides that way.

Silkies meanest chicken in a small body... as a child we had one and would always chase me through the yard.

Well, my three silkies are hens, and their heads are so puffy they can't see very well. No threat there.  ;) All the silkie roosters I have had were mean though. I am just keeping these three for pets since they are so goofy.

I use a pestle & mortar [I know.. pretty old school ] allows good control of how fine you want to grind the NLS

Haha yeah. I have an Etsy business using recycled wool sweaters for baby clothing, "Chickadee & Me". The chickens did not appreciate it, but I had a good laugh. Lucky I can't get a sweater on fish.  :P Starting to raise mottled bantam cochins this year for show, with any luck.

A little bit of chick starter and fish food isn't going to kill you. Probably make for some stinky coffee though. I drink tea so no worries there.

Mrs. Kribensis seems to be snacking on all her eggs though, so I guess grinding fish food is not going to be an issue.  :-\
