Snails: apples and golden mystery??

Hi,

Wondering if any one has had experience with apples and golden mystery snails?  Pros/cons?
I wouldn't mind them in my tanks + the additional help with the algae is a plus..

I like the Golden Mystery Snails. I've bred them before. I am currently trying to do it again. I have 8 of them in a 10 gallon with some Killies and Khulli Loaches. It's One of the cleanest looking tanks I have.

Pros - look nice, eat leftover food.

Cons - get stinking big. Like golf ball size given enough time.  Produce enough waste sometimes you'd think they were a pleco.  : )  Loaches will terrorize them.  Even 2 inch baby yoyo loaches vs. giant mystery snails.

Mystery snails will pin down and consume adult delta-tail male guppies at night.  Quickly, too.  Learned that by surprise many years ago after setting up a fancy guppy tank for my son.  The "Killer Snails" were then banished.

Mystery snails will pin down and consume adult delta-tail male guppies at night.  Quickly, too.  Learned that by surprise many years ago after setting up a fancy guppy tank for my son.  The "Killer Snails" were then banished.

I would assume that regular guppies would have been fine, not being weighed down by the extra finnage...but that's a personal preference thing, I reckon - wild-type vs. show guppies.  Anyways, I have had mystery snails eat a variety of things as well...but about half of them have died off themselves from unknown causes, possibly diet or lack of attention compared to some of my other species.

I discovered one of mine eating one of my crypt plants I just paid $9 for at the fish store, so they are spending some time in "snail jail" until I figure out if I can keep them from eating my plants. I think it depends on what species you have if they will eat plants, and many of them look similar. Nerite snails are supposed to be better at controling algae and don't eat plants generally, but I don't think they look as neat.

my experience comparded to other snail..... not hardy at all most snails you cant kill these not so much

I agree about guppies w/normal finnage being safe.  Snails will die if the water is not sufficiently alkaline it seems...their shells begin to erode and then they're in snail heaven.

Be careful with apple snails; I thing they're illegal.  Can anyone confirm?
