Can anyone help Identify these fish? I posted pics
« on: January 17, 2013, 10:02:13 PM »
I went to the store today and bought some cichlids labled "white top afra" but when i came home and researched them they were actually "Metriaclima pulpican"

What should I do? Is it ok to ask for some sort of compensation, like store credit or something?
The store is more than half hour away and my tank is big and have a lot of rocks in them, so its gonna be very hard to catch them.

This hasn't happened to me before so I don't know what to do

Here's the pic of the actual fish

You can try but chances are they will say its your fault for not researching before you bought it.

:/ but shouldn't the store hold some responsibility for not labeling their fish correctly?

Yes you would think that but also working at a store people will try to get one over on you everyday. Maybe if you go in and talk to them about it and explain to them its listed incorrectly they will do something for you. What store was it?

Did you go in looking specifically for "white top afra" or were you just browsing what they had, liked the fish, and bought them under the wrong name?

If you were specifically seeking "white top afra", you might try talking to them about it.

Overall, the best thing to do, as had already been mentioned, is to research better ahead of time. I realize it's not easy if you're new to the hobby, but with knowledge comes power ... including the power of being able to better identify differences between species.  :)

but with knowledge comes power ...

Is that a school house rock quote or family guy. First two things that came to mind.

I didn't go into the store looking for "white top afras"...I just thought they looked awesome in the picture they displayed of them and bought it.

I bought 2 juvis, supposedly 1 male and 1 female.
one looks like this

and the other looks like this

from researching "white top afras" today, i learned that the juveniles both male and female are blue, instead of the drab color the female has in the 2nd pic posted above

so am i right, and they are not afras?

I had the same thing happen to me.

We bought a pair.  When we got them home and looked closer, we started to question more.  The guy that sold them to us was so sure and talked so highly of the kinds, etc.  So, we had no doubt they were what he said.

I brought this up with them and they actually agreed to take them back.  But, as like you... they were already in the tank, etc.

So... I just kept them.  Hope they end up a descent looking fish as they were $40 for the pair.

it's been years since I had them. The fish in the picture looks like mine did but I'm going on memory & cannot be positive.

Here are 3 pics of the pair I bought (they were labeled white top afras). If you can help ID them that would be great.
