Just did some measuring for where I plan to put it downstairs. 8ft would "somewhat fit" lol...but honestly with 8ft it would end up making for a smaller than normal doorway where I plan to build the wall to section off the office. I don't plan on using a door, so that wouldn't be a problem with having to fit an odd size door, but I think it might make access to the storage behind the wall I plan to build a bit difficult. I also plan to build the tank into the wall I am going to construct to section off the office, so I have to take that into account as well.

So I think as of now it looks like a 6ft tank is gonna be the way to go....unless they make a 7ft tank? which would be IDEAL because it would give me more size yet still retain the proper size doorway.

Well, acrylic tank builders will build any custom size you want. As for glass, there was a company that made a 7' tank...and they are pretty nice but heavy as hell...in fact, there was one on here that just sold this month.
I just have to go pick it up sometime very soon  ;D.

As previously mentioned, if you opt for a 125g you will most likely prefer bigger after setting it up.
If you are going with a 6' tank and you have enough room, skip the 72"x18" footprint tanks and go with a 72"x24" footprint.

i run a single fx-5, with a sponge on my 400 gallon with over 60 fish in it. i do run 2 300 watt heaters. one day i plan to drill another hole to add a second canister, weather its a fx-5 or eheim filter. know my 150 open top has 3 110s and 2 305s on it because it open, if i waas more patient i would have drilled more holes in the 400 before i set it up. like you never used a sump, and it wasnt going to be on this tank.

Been thinking lots about the big tank the past week and have made up my mind to for sure do it. I've started working on cleaning the other half of the basement so I can start laying out the office and the general area where the tank will be. Probably won't be actually ready to buy the tank till after Christmas, but after measuring again I have decided to not rule out an 8ft tank. If I can find a decent price 8ft tank when I am ready to buy one January/Feb then I would not pass an 8ft'er up. If it becomes to hard to find an 8ft for a decent price then I'll go with a 6ft, but like someone else mentioned, if I do a 6ft I'd like to find one with a 24" depth front to back.

Also plan to do a full 3d background again like I have done on both my 55's, which I am REALLY looking forward to having all that real estate in a 6-8ft tank to make a sweet 3d background. I can't wait to actually get started with this project 8)

the guy that builds our tanks said he would do a 7ft tank if you really wanted one but he just will not go too high, you might even be able to order from him directly and maybe he will deliver it to you for a fee. he said he would do 24 high as the highest he will go but that is a lot of pressure for half inch glass. It would be about 210 gallons and if you wanted the tank drilled he would do that as well. We do have the 125 down as well sitting in the store along with 175,90 and a 30 long.
