Bio media
« on: August 25, 2012, 11:35:18 PM »
I want to find some cheap bio media for a sump that I am finishing up. I know you can use bio balls and pot scrubbers but I am not having any luck finding pot scrubbers... Would breaking up terracotta pots work even? I am looking for ideas right now pretty much. I can get bio balls from work but with my luck we will need them as soon as I take some home...

Terra cotta wouldn't be porous enough IMO.

I used lava rock and had great success with it.  Once it is well cleaned I put it in pantyhose and added it to my sump.

Right I was thinking that because it would be the same concept as putting live rock into a saltwater tank. Can i just go to like menards or something and pick up a bag of it?

When I was doing a live rock tank I used plastics hair rollers. Lots of surface and air for the bacteria. They were the kind that are cylindrical  and have wrap around clips.

I just got my lava rock at Meier.  It needed a good rinse but it worked

Pond filter media makes great sump media.  It comes in linear feet.  Cheap
