Salvini Fry
« on: July 02, 2012, 01:19:55 PM »
So I woke up this morning to a huge batch of salvini eggs. I've had Convicts spawn before and used the fry mostly for feeders. Assuming they are viable and hatch out, I've considered trying to grow out some of the baby Sals to sell/trade. A few questions for those who may know:
1. how long would I need to anticipate them growing out before they approach viable (okay sellable) size?
2. how soon after hatching could I remove them from the tank to a small grow out tank? (my initial experience with the convict fry in the main tank was not pleasant- all the other fish got terrorized by the parents)
3. How many would I reasonably be able to part with to local shops/individual buys (in other words, how many should I try to keep rather than treating as feeders for my other fish)?

Thanks for any help you can offer!

1- 3-4 months
2- it's easiest to remove them just as they are free swimming.  I like to leave a few with the parents,  so the male doesn't turn on the female.
3- growout the whole batch (except what was left with parents)   cull deformities & the fry themselves will take care of the weaker ones.

If you're keeping up with proper tank/fish care- the parents will spawn again, before long  & then use them as feeders.

Here are a couple shots of them together- in the one the Female is clearer in the other the male is.... they're cellphone pics, so they aren't the greatest. Both of them have a little bit more blue in them than shows up well here.

They look very nice.  Good reds, seems like every time I see them offered the reds are washed out.

Nice fishies. I want to get some of these guys. Good luck on breeding these guys out! Even if they eat the eggs, some parents just take a few tries.

not much to report.... they spawned a second time but the eggs were gone before I could do anything meaningful with them. Their first spawn was under a piece of slate, the second on top of the same rock, so in plain view for the rest of the tank, I doubt it ever had a chance. Since then, the sals have remained paired up, and will go through all the mating routine, but as of yet, no more eggs.

If anyone is still interested in some salvini babies i should have some ready in next month or two. I can supply pictures of parents and shots of approximately 100-200 babies. Let me know and i can post shots due to this being old post.

I posted these photos of the salvini fry and honduran red point fry.

The first photo is batch of eggs laid within last couple days. The second photo is of the male, and the final picture is of the female.
