I have a group of 8 bought to cycle a new 75 gallon tank. My intention was to keep them with, to be purchased, juvenile cichlids. They area a large hardy tetra that can handle a wide variety of water chemistry. I'm afraid they are to food aggressive to allow the cichlids to grow quickly. I still think they would be great in a adult cichlid tank with fish that can't fit them in their mouths. I'd keep them in another tank if I had room. They don't appear to be fish aggressive at all. I also have a long fin danio in the tank and a few catfish. The tetra do fight each other but leave the other species alone. And they don't leave marks or shred each others fins.
The buenos aires tetra are eating flake food, 1mm pellets (they eat them like corn on the cob). It is really fun to put some gammrus shrimp or a small worms in the tank. One of the 8 will grab it and the rest will give chase until a violent feeding frenzy kicks off and in seconds its over. It's like they are little piranha, but more attractive and leave other fish alone.
They leave my Java fern alone, but quickly shred other live plants.
I'm in Brighton. Can meet at the Costco
